Persinal Narrative Essay: Playing The Piano

Contemporary music is more enjoyable to play on the piano than classical because it’s appealing and entertaining. Contemporary music, also called current music, is a style that is modern and transformed into different variations of songs using piano keys and chords. Classical music was written in European tradition during a period lasting approximately from 1750 to 1830. Even though some classical music is interesting, it can get boring and repetitive over time. 

I’ve been playing piano for ten years. Although I’ve played many different genres, I’m considered a classically trained pianist. According to hoffmanacademy.com, it takes ten to fifteen years of concentrated study with a master teacher and hours of daily practice to be considered a professional classical performer. Most people don’t want to take that much time developing a skill. While I don’t desire to become a professional performer, classical music has given me a strong foundation in various musical techniques. 

Contemporary music takes much less time to learn than other genres. It's also easier to have a deeper connection with the music. It’s difficult to learn and connect to the classical genre because many people don’t listen to that type of music regularly. Playing current music makes me happier than when I’m playing classical. You’re able to interpret the song in your own style, which helps you have a more pleasant learning experience. While there is also room for individual interpretation of classical music, it’s generally expected to be played exactly how it’s written.

Most audiences have an immediate connection to current music because they are more familiar with the songs. This gives the pianist a deeper appreciation of their time spent learning the piece. Contemporary is also a great way to develop a profound ear for music. There is no need for a score or sheet music when playing by ear; you’re able to go where the music moves you. It’s less difficult to express tone and control dynamics, which are skills that take many years to master. Classical music requires patience and perseverance; both are difficult to sustain. 

Although I’ve learned the traditions and techniques necessary to play classical piano, playing current music brings me the most excitement. It's important to do what brings you joy instead of what’s traditional, and playing contemporary music on the piano is a great way for me to express myself. I’m thankful for being exposed to the piano at a young age; it’s given me the ability to listen to and learn more about different genres of music. I’m eager to see what new songs I will learn in the future.
