My mother once told me, that in life, anything can be accomplished with great effort and hard work towards it. With those words, I was able to achieve and receive my first ever award.

Even while sitting in my class row, which is in the middle of our enormous hall, I could still hear the very faint, but soft pitter-patter of water droplets on the rough, cold concrete outside In the hall, the students talking about their weekends and catching up with one another in hushed tones. It was a Wednesday morning, but overhead, the skies rumbled with fury as its heavy downpour kept us inside the hall. I was sitting in my little year 2 class, sitting next  2 very good friends at the time, who were also Indian, just like me.

At our tiny primary school, we have a service at our school every Wednesday, called Worship, which always happens in the mornings. The whole school, from the Prep kids to the year 6’s, will enter the hall and sit in rows according to year levels, with the Prep kids at the front and the Yr. 6’s at the very back.

Once everyone sits in their according rows, the school pastor will arrive, and everyone will cease talking. This service is held to announce daily notices, what new weekly events will be happening and the dispersing of awards to students who have behaved and acted outstandingly to teachers, and who receive Student of The Week.

Since my enrolment to this school, I haven’t been able to receive a single Student of the Week. My parents every day after school, they ask for the daily newsletter, which gets handed out to every child in the school every day. Particularly on Wednesdays, my parents get extremely concerned when they don’t see me in the faces of the students who have receive an award. They always tell me to ‘aim for the top, and you’ll get there!’, and ‘you are not putting enough effort into anything!’, which is why I will try and succeed in my quest to achieve my first award to make my parents proud.

Just then, the pastor came in, sporting his usual snow white cassock and stood at his usual place at the altar. Everyone stood up to show respect, then lowered back into their seats. ‘Welcome, Parents, Teachers, Staff and Students to our Worship. We begin today’s service in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen. He did a little prayer to himself, then he handed the microphone over to the co-ordinator of the assembly. The teacher’s name was Miss. Dell-Antonio, and she oversaw announcing the daily notices and handing out the Student of The Week to the recipients. She began speaking with a very firm voice: “Can I have silence from everybody in the hall, please?”. “Thank you”. She read over the daily notices, and the new upcoming events happening later that week, and now onto my favourite part of the assembly, which was: The handing out of the Student of The Week.
