Personal Statement Sample

Computers have always been an integral part of my life since my early teenage years. From developing my first “Who wants to be a millionaire” QBasic program to developing multiple full-fledged applications on my own, I’ve come a long way but still much to learn. As I’ve progressed through the journey to garner knowledge of computer science, I’ve worked on multiple technologies and research fields such as Machine Learning and Software Development. These experiences have not only augmented my interest in computers but also provided me with the skills and professionalism required for your university. 

My interest in computers and especially computer programming was known from my teenage years, hence it was only imminent that I pursue an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. Throughout my undergraduate study, I was awarded six out of eight possible merit-based scholarships. I completed my bachelor's degree as the topper of the batch with a GPA of 3.21/4.00 and an honorable student. Similarly, during my undergraduate, I was selected as the college representative in numerous workshops and seminars which exposed me to the up-and-coming technologies and professional environment. I was fortunate enough to have had worked with excellent faculties that allowed me to showcase my potential and amplify my knowledge of computer science. But completing my undergraduate degree was by no means a small task considering my financial constraint. My family were unable to afford a decent laptop during my undergraduate study which pushed me to further overcome my shortcomings. Every assignment, tech event or project demanded me to overcome my shortcomings. From staying extra hours at the college to do my assignments after 6-7 hours of college hour to borrowing laptops from friends to do my assignments and projects, I always felt the tenacity to challenge my drawbacks to complete my goal and get my undergraduate degree. 

After the completion of my degree, I worked as a full-stack developer and app developer where I learnt the ways of the professionals. My experiences as a web and mobile application developer in the professional world made me discover my penchant for innovation rather than the conventional programming job. It was after meeting and working under Dr. Bikash Lamsal and Mr. Ananta Pant that I was able to discover my research interest. The experience of working for Dr. Bikash Lamsal and under Mr. Ananta Pant on their research has been an astonishing one. Working as a research assistant for Mr. Ananta Pant for several projects, highlighted the research part of computer science. It also revealed to me my passion for research in comparison to a commercial job. It was fascinating to work on matters which was innovative rather than commercial. I have also completed a 12-week Machine Learning course from Coursera which is taught by Dr. Andrew Ng. Similarly, I’ve worked on multiple machine learning challenges in Kaggle.  Nevertheless, the technical knowledge of a full stack developer was something I will cherish and expand throughout my life. But I want to extend my knowledge of computer science further.

The relentless pursuit for knowledge and the experience imparted upon me has persuaded me to pursue my graduate study at your esteemed institution. I hope to continue my studies and believe that your reputed university can best help me excel and support my dreams. I know that under the guidance of such excellent faculties, I can further enhance my understanding of computer science and prepare me to be a catalyst in the profession.  

In addition to my career in the technical field, I have been involved in several scouting activities (similar to boy scouts and girl scouts) for the last five years. I have been involved in numerous events, which developed my leadership skills and my interpersonal skills. Being affiliated with multiple scout activities, I have developed my communication and team skills to complete a job with high team synergy. Organizing and participating in multiple social activities have given me a chance to serve my community and develop my skills, and I hope to utilize all my skills and prove to be a valuable asset to your institution. I sincerely hope that I qualify all the admission requirements into your graduate program and that the admissions committee favorably receives my application.
