Growing up I knew that my future would be working with children. However, the only career I knew that involved being with children was teaching. It is not that I don't want to teach children, but it was not one of my passions. I never truly knew the other options when it came to wanting to work with children, hence how there are countless options out there when it comes to finding the right career path. My career goal would be to work with children in hospitals and help them feel better and I know it can be a frightening and uncomfortable place for them, so making them feel better was important for me.

My track fits with my career goals since I will be working with the community as well as providing services to families whose children may be going through difficult times. It wasn't until recently that I started becoming interested in this field, starting two years back. I have enjoyed working with children, and being in the medical field. I am currently working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at a nursing facility along with a rehab center. I enjoy helping those who have gone through situations that have caused them to end up in our facility and then recovering from it and leaving healthy afterward. The reason being is that having a brother that is in and out of the hospital once a year for his heart check-up has allowed me to see how his heart condition has affected him and feel different compared to others. Knowing that there are numerous children out there going through something has made me want to help them with their health and make them feel better about themselves. I have not worked with children in a hospital setting, but I have worked with children and worked in a hospital setting, just not together yet.

Growing up and being involved in my church youth group, I have worked with children in countless different ways. Every summer we have a Church summer camp that lasts a week. We are in charge of a group of children and we are assigned to take them to various activities and essentially be their leader for the day. Also, I am currently a children's ministry teacher for my church. For once a week every Monday evening. Around 35 kids gather together and are split up between ages and are taught a bible topic for about 45 minutes. This was my first year doing it, so I am currently an assistant but hope to be a leader one year when I gain more experience. In high school, I also worked along with children who struggled with English being their second language. A teammate of mine in high school started an after-school program for children with low reading scores since they did not have much help with their English and reading. Twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, we would go to the elementary school next door to my high school and for an hour help the students individually with their homework and reading assignments. Meeting with the parents, after seeing that they did not speak English well, helped me understand that it may be hard for these students to receive help at home. Seeing how appreciated the parents were after and noticing the changes in the children's behavior and confidence is what made me realize that this was my passion.

What I have learned about my field is how broad it is and how I have numerous options to choose from. One aspect that I was afraid of when it came to finding a career goal is that the job would be easy to find anywhere and have stability. What's expected from me as a professional in child development would be to make a difference in a child’s behavior and make sure they are the healthiest they could be. One detail I remember that has helped shape me as a person and included my goals was getting comments from parents after working with their children. During the church camp, one of the mom's kids who I was in charge of commented that I would be great with kids, and she said that she's a principle, and it's coming from a principle standpoint. I know that because I have had plenty of experience working with children and getting a quality feel for it, I know what to expect and have the patience and passion for it. I have also worked with children in countless different environments and have never felt so thought I would not be able to handle it or doubted my choices.

One aspect that I would like to further acquire more experience with is to get more health experiences with children. Even though I do work in a healthcare setting, I wish to focus more on children and grow more experiences with that. A change that I want to improve in this field is to help and create more awareness for those who were born with health issues and bring more attention towards them. I do not think many understand the time that goes through health checkups and hospital visits for the children could affect a child's behavior.

I would like to see more awareness towards those children that have to go through the hospital in and out and having to miss out in school is hard for children. My goal would be to work along with them and help them along their difficult journey. I would also like to help children with more benefits because they miss out on so much when it comes to being in the hospital for many visits.
