Perspectives in Flowers for Algernon and The Black Walnut Tree Essay Sample

During history propaganda was spread due to the different perspectives of people. It is mandatory to take in consideration the perspective of other people because people don’t know what’s going through their head and they shouldn’t judge people's ways/ideas. This is seen in the story Flowers For Algernon and The Black Walnut Tree.

It is mandatory to consider the perspectives of others because people don’t know what is going on in their head. In Flowers For Algernon, Charlie got his surgery without knowing that there could be possible side effects. The doctors didn’t tell Charlie because they knew he probably didn’t comprehend what could occur. They took advantage of his low IQ and misled him into getting the surgery. Charlie writes in progress report four, “Their going to use me! Im so exited I can hardly write.” This quote shows Charlie didn't know the potential outcomes. The doctors should have taken into consideration that he didn’t know everything about the surgery and should have told him the possible side effects.

Perspectives affect people's interpretation of an event by making people judge others' opinions. This is shown in “The Black Walnut Tree.” The two main characters face the decision of whether or not to sell their tree to pay off their mortgage. When people hear that they don’t want to sell the tree, they may think it’s funny because it’s just “some tree.” In reality, “What my mother and I both know is that we'd crawl with shame in the emptiness we'd made in our own and our fathers' backyard” the main character says. The tree has many memories linked with their family and it holds value within them. This shows that yes it is a tree, but it also holds a value. People shouldn’t judge them for having different perspectives on the story. As an outsider people may think they would sell the tree in their shoes, but in their eyes they couldn’t forget their memories.

Not everyone has the same perspective on a story but people should still be willing to listen to their side of the story without judging them. Therefore, people shouldn’t spread false information or make fun of someone for thinking something different than someone.
