Persuasive Essay on Seat Belt Laws

Seat Belts have saved many lives and stopped some serious injuries from happening. ´´Seatbelts saved 12,713 lives during 2009. If everyone involved in accidents had worn seat belts that year, 3,688 more people would have survived. They also help you not spend millions of dollars on medical bills.¨ Helping people save millions of dollars that would have been spent on a lot of medical bills. Hospital care is expensive, and it can take weeks or even months to recover from serious injuries. Every year, seat belts help save millions of dollars that would have been spent on medical bills.¨ These are some of the important reasons why they should impose the seat belt law in all states.

The seat belt law has helped many people but some people started to disagree with the seat belt law because they would feel like they don't have their own say in what they want to do. Nevertheless people would not wear seat belts and once they got into a car accident they would get severely injured or even die from this. So, yes, having the seat belt law in all states would be good because when you are wearing the seat belt they can save your life like they have done so many times before. For example, In the text it says ¨According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seatbelts saved 12,713 lives during 2009. If everyone involved in accidents that year, 3,688 more people would have survived.¨ More people would have survived these accidents if they had put on their seat belts. Seat Belts have saved many lives 12, 713 lives were saved during the year 2009 as well as 3,688 people dying or dead from not wearing their seat belts. Going back a little when seat belts were not even installed in cars yet, people started seeing that most people's deaths or injuries were being caused from being flung at the windshield or steering wheel. Soon a company called Saab was the first company to put seat belts as a standard feature to their car. According to the text pg 1,para 2-8 it says ¨It was not until the 1920s that American doctors began recommending that seat belts be installed in cars. They noted that most people injured  in accidents were hurt by being flung into the steering wheel or windshield. Seatbelts prevented this by holding the body in place. In 1958 Saab became the first company to include seatbelts as a standard feature in its entire fleet. The modern three-point seatbelt was introduced by volvo in 1959. It is safer  than the earlier type because it includes a strap across the chest to restrain the upper body. By 1964, front seatbelts were standard in all cars, and rear seatbelts followed in 1968. Nevertheless, stubborn consumers largely refused to wear seatbelts.¨ American doctors started to note the reason why many people were dead or seriously injured, since seatbelts we're now a custom to the carś they started to prevent people from being flung into a steering wheel or windshield considering something is now restraining the body. By then in 1964, front seat belts were installed in cars then not soon after in 1968, rear seat belts were installed in all cars as well. Not having seatbelts in cars like we do today would have today would have been bad and many, many lives would have been lost. Not to mention a lot of people would be in debt or having to pay for their hospital bills. Besides, people would maybe not have enough money to pay or would lose a lot of money since they are paying their hospital bill. 

Seat Belts have saved millions of lives however they have also saved millions of dollars as well that would have been spent on medical bills. Medical bills are very expensive especially how bad the injury is, still if you wear a seatbelt and get into an accident your medical bill would most likely not be that much. In addition , paragraph 6 of ¨seat belt laws save lives¨ it says ¨Seat Belts also prevent hundreds of thousands of serious injuries every year. This has financial as well as health benefits. Hospital care is expensive, and it can take weeks or even months to recover from serious injuries. Every year, seat belts help save millions of dollars that would have been spent on medical bills.” Wearing seat belts has prevented people from spending millions of dollars that would have been spent on medical bills. Every time a person gets into an accident they would have to go to the hospital and after their trip or time there they would have to spend a lot of money plus the person might not have enough money to pay for it or might be wasting millions of dollars for a medical bill. Soon states started enforcing the seat belt law yet people stopped wearing seat belts. Yet another example is “Early in 1984, 20 percent of New Yorkers wore seat belts. After New York passed the Nation's first seat belt law later that year, the number shot up to 60 percent. Other states followed New York's lead, and today New Hampshire is the only state that does not have a seat belt law. However, not all states have had the same degree of positive results seen in New York. In California, for example, seatbelt use increased from 20 percent to just 40 percent after the state passed a seat belt law in 1986.” After states started passing this law less and less people were wearing seat belts. An example is in New York less than 20 percent of people were wearing seat belts only then the law of wearing seatbelts was made. Now the percentage of being less than 20 shot up all the way to 60.

Seatbelts have prevented some serious injuries not only that but death too. Yet again in the text it says “Simply put, seatbelts are lifesavers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seatbelts saved 12,713 lives during 2009. If everyone involved in accidents had worn seat belts that year, 3,688 more people would have survived.” This is why they should impose the seatbelt law in all the states they have been saving lives for many years, without having this many lives would be gone before we know it. States without the seatbelt law have people risking their lives whenever they go driving. 14,955  lives have been saved since the seatbelt law was passed, including the 2,549 passengers that were killed for not wearing their seat belt. All those passengers were killed for not wearing a seatbelt or following the seat belt law. Although some people wear their seatbelt, the seatbelt can get stuck when you are in an accident then trap you in the car. Additionally, In the text “Seat Belt laws save lives” paragraph 4, it says “A stronger argument is that seatbelts can actually be dangerous in accidents. It is true that seatbelts can occasionally cause injury to the neck and torso. Some people have been trapped inside burning cars by seatbelts.” if you wear a seatbelt you can still get injured, rarely this kind of accident ever happens.
