Persuasive Essay on Too Much Homework

High school students have full-time jobs.  They wake up, do after-school activities, homework,  and then do it all again the next day. Students do homework after they have practice and, in some cases, after a job on top of training. High schoolers have too many assignments that are expected to be done the next day. The problem is that teacher give high schoolers too much homework and not enough time to complete it.

Sports is an extracurricular activity and takes up time outside of school. Students are encouraged to do as many extracurricular activities that they can.  In some cases, students have to make up work when they get back from a game or the extracurricular event that they missed at 4 or 11 at night. From a student-athlete point of view,  it is challenging to keep up with the outside work.  I play golf, and the tournaments last all day, creating a gigantic pile of work to do when I get home. I understand that it was my choice, and these are the expectations but having to make up for 8 hours of school plus an average of 3 hours of homework in a night is absurd. 

How much does homework help us?  We need practice to help us remember what we are doing in school, like practicing how to drive or basketball.  From personal experience, I can say that students try to complete the assignment as fast as possible.  They have better things to be doing after school ends and during the weekend and completing homework is not at the top of their list.  In some cases, homework does help you prepare for a test or help you understand what's being taught in school, but teenagers want to be done with the assignment and get a good grade. They will look up answers or ask others to make a decent grade on a project.  Every student has done this because they either want to go to bed, forget to do it, or don't want to do it at all.  When students do this, the homework is not helping them learn. Kids spend a lot of time figuring out how to cheat rather than just doing the work itself—a big part of homework results in students learning how to cheat.

Sleep is an essential part of everyone's day. It would be best if you had enough sleep to function correctly and complete tasks. When kids get home from their extracurricular activities and still have three or more hours of homework creates a decline in the student's education. Focusing  becomes difficult because they are fatigued and can't focus on anything other than that. Going to bed at two in the morning because of homework does not help you memorize what you are learning. You need your body to be fully energized to grasp what is being taught to you.  Teachers go home from work and can go to bed at a decent time, wondering why all their students come to school every morning exhausted when it's ironically from the work they said they had assigned. 

Some students go to work after school and play a big part in raising their families.  Kids like this shouldn't have to worry about the assignment they still need to do.  Spending time with your family should take priority. You don't see them for eight hours a day because you're at school so you should be able to spend quality time with them when you are at your own home.  When I get home from school, I want to talk with my family, but instead, I go to my room and work on my assignments.  To me, there is nothing more important than family.  These are the people that will be with you every step of the way and have your back no matter what.  It is essential to have a good connection with your family, and being able to spend quality time with them plays a huge part in this.  It is difficult to do this if you're stuck in your room for the whole night doing homework due the following day. 

People can propose multiple solutions for the homework problem.  Teachers can give less homework,  time at the end of class to work on it,  or no homework at all.  My solution is to provide at least 15 minutes dedicated to completing the assignment at the end of class. 

I understand why no homework at all isn't the brightest idea.  Homework is practice on what you learn and what you need to be more successful later in life.  When I have to study for a test, I look back at the homework many times.  Homework is a good study tool to use when struggling with the topic, and there is a correlation between homework and better grades.  Homework is an excellent way to raise your grades, which is why getting rid of homework would be more hurtful than it would be helpful.

I propose getting 15 minutes at least at the end of class, which can cut out many teenagers' stress and anxiety over their workload.  Doing this will allow teenagers to have less homework when they get home from school.  Less homework at home means more time to be with friends and family.  My Spanish teacher always gave us 10 to 15 minutes at the end of class to do homework.  I rarely had Spanish homework to do once I got home.  As a person who gets stressed out quickly, this was a massive help in decreasing my frustrations.  It was one less thing that I had to worry about that night.  I believe that students will get their work done more often.  Even if they have only a third of the work done because of the allotted time given at the end of class, students will have much less to worry about once the last bell rings at the end of the school day.  If in that fifteen minutes a kid does not finish the homework entirely then they will be responsible for completing it at a later time. The 15 minutes isn't so they can achieve it, but it's so they can have a better chance of reducing the amount of homework they have to finish once they get home from school. 

The opposing side might say that teachers need the entire class time to elaborate and expand on their lessons fully.  I understand that teachers might need more time to teach the said lesson, and if that is the case, teachers can cut back on the homework they sign that night.  If we can get to the majority of the school days giving fifteen minutes at the end of each class to work on homework then I believe there will be an increase in higher grade point averages. 

Teenagers shouldn't have to worry about homework after getting back from eight hours of school plus whatever activities they have after. Students also shouldn't have to worry about homework on the weekends.  The weekend is the student's break from school. It's a chance to relax and have fun and not have a worry in the world.  It's a chance to recharge.  Yes,  homework is needed but not as much as it is required. Let the students spend time with their families and friends and have fun.  Just giving 15 minutes at the end of the class could easily play a part in doing so.  Fifteen minutes is a good start in helping a student achieve a brighter future.
