Does God exist? Today, seven percent of the global population refuse to believe that God exists, however, we can prove that there is a God by using the fact that humans exist. Questions arise as to why our entire universe exists, why we are here, and more importantly, if there is an outside power, or a god, who is keeping us in existence. This paper will discuss the arguments of God’s reality and clarify any doubts one might have on this crucial topic.

Let’s talk about motion. Motion is the reduction of a being or thing from potentiality to actuality, for example: a car sitting still has the potential to move, when the gas pedal is pressed the car goes from potentiality to actuality by moving. What force puts us in motion? We put a ball in motion by kicking it, different forces such as kinetic and chemical energy put us in motion; then the question arises: “what puts those forces in motion?” Saint Thomas Aquinas says that: “...it is necessary to arrive at a first mover, put in motion by no other; and this everyone understands to be God.”

Everything in existence has a nature, humans have human nature but it is not in our nature to exist. We have no control over whether or not we exist. We could exist, or we could not. Humans are the most intelligent beings in the world, but there must be some greater intelligence who created all the mysteries of the universe that we do not comprehend.  Something or someone is keeping us all in existence, and that someone cares about us. That someone has to be God.

We know that if there is a being keeping us in existence, he cares about us because good exists in the world; but if this being is all powerful how could he let evil continue? Evil is a challenge, and even though it exists it does not mean that God is less powerful. We fight evil every day, it is an obstacle that must be overcome, if we overcome it, God will certainly reward us. According to Saint Augustine: "Since God is the highest good, He would not allow any evil to exist in His works, unless His omnipotence and goodness were such as to bring good even out of evil."

Do we need a God? This question circles back to the argument of motion. We have already deemed it impossible that the world merely created itself, there must be a first mover who created it. The universe was created by God, and the first humans were created by God, but after that...do we need God? Some may deem it a personal choice as to whether or not we need God in our lives, but if God made us, he must care about us, right? If he cares about us, we should at least acknowledge Him. How do we please Him, though?

As long as humans have existed, they have developed some sort of religion, and why is that? All humans are born with Natural Law,  humans have always looked for someone greater than themselves: “The human person, with his openness to truth and beauty, his sense of moral goodness, his freedom and the voice of his conscience, with his longings for the infinite … discerns signs of his spiritual soul. The soul, the seed of eternity we bear in ourselves, irreducible to the merely material, can have its origin only in God.”  (CCC 33) Our intellects are ordered toward God, but if we don’t have truth, we can end up creating a bizarre religion; of which we have thousands of examples throughout history.

So what is Truth? How do we choose between over 4,000 religions? We will not discuss religions here, that is a topic for another paper.. In this paper we have discussed motion, our existence, the existence of evil, necessity of a God, and Natural Law; hopefully, it has convinced the reader of God’s existence. However, do not stop researching; there are more arguments to be discovered, remember that: the ultimate motion is existence and God is existence itself.
