Assume you are a teen interested in religion and try to discover more about Christianity. When you google Christianity, you would get over one trillion results, and read an article stating Christians do not believe Jesus is God’s son. This is however clearly not the case. There are so many different sources out there on the internet that someone could easily get confused and find information that is wrong. However, teens have the option to get unbiased and correct information from their schools. We do have classes at Sierra such as world history and clubs that mention religion, but not enough for students to be aware. In our world history classes we get one small section of a chapter that talks about religion, and even then, it just brushes lightly on the subject. And in the clubs at Sierra, our only club that has anything to do with religion is a Christian club, and they only talk about Christianity when there are so many other religions out there. Sierra needs to provide a religion class to help students broaden religion perspectives, receive unbiased information, and broaden their worldview.

Sierra should first provide a religion class to assist students in broadening their religious views. Students will gain a better understanding of the fundamentals of a faith, as well as a better understanding of why a religion have particular customs and a better understanding of what is and is not acceptable behavior in order to avoid disrespecting a religion (parallelism). For instance, a Transgender person may think it is appropriate to wear a hijab (a religious head covering worn by Muslim women) since they identify as female. However, some individuals may take it personally and attack them, resulting in an altercation. However, it is not the student's fault because they were unaware that this was not permitted and may offend someone. Understanding the fundamentals of a religion will benefit students in the future to avoid criticism and not offend anyone.

Next, religious education lessons are aimed at educating students and make them increasingly conscious of other people's faiths and points of view. This is a vital step in fostering a more tolerant community. This would help to avoid misconceptions for Sierra students, especially those who actively practice their faith. An analogy would be our Sikh population at Sierra being very large but students not understanding why they wear a turban. Understanding this metric will ensure that students are informed.

Due to the obvious separation between church and state, you may feel that students must not only learn what already is taught but – but learn (repetition) about religion at school as well. However, teaching students regarding various religions is not intended to convert them to religion; rather, the goal is to learn about various faiths is to make them less ignorant and more conscious of how other people live, as well as to thwart them from discriminating or being inconsiderate of others. For contrast, many people discriminate against Indians who wear turbans since they believe they are Muslims. Or even that Catholics are not allowed to consume meat on Fridays throughout Lent. Individuals will become more spiritually conscious and tolerant after learning about all of these accommodating. Another argument why a religion course is unneeded is because students may conduct their own study and avoid having to attend a class. However, there is a lot of religious resources on the internet, and students will be unable to determine which data is credible. Students, for example, may mistake Taoism for Buddhism, which is plainly not the case.

Is it fair that many students are prejudiced as a result of media misrepresentation?  (Rhetorical question) Browsing for religious material online is not advantageous for students since the media is reporting on the country's political views rather than the core belief. People look at leaders from various nations and believe what the religion teaches. An illustration would be what is happening in Afghanistan, where the Taliban has taken over and claims to be representing "Islam," yet they are not. People are becoming puzzled as a result of this because they assume that anything the Taliban does represents Islam. This is dividing people, particularly teenagers, who are easily swayed.

If Sierra provides a religion class to help students broaden their religion perspectives, receive unbiased information, and broaden their religion perspective. Students will no longer have to sift through 1 trillion Google results and decide on their own what is right or wrong information. They will have better access to information if Sierra provides a religion class or more clubs that talk about different religions in depth. First, our school will provide students with unbiased information and more in depth then the classes and clubs they previously offered. Next, becoming religiously aware will help students broaden their world views and understand other people’s world views. Lastly, students will become religiously aware making them better people as a whole. We will need adults to call the superintendent of MUSD, Dr. Clark Burke at (209)858-0729 to solve this dilemma.
