Charlie Brown once said, “It’s never too late to learn… But sometimes it’s too early!” The average US school time starts from 7:15 to 8:15 AM. While it may seem reasonable, many people might end up having to wake up around 6:30 AM. People need to get up early to eat, get dressed, and drive to school. Some students may live 30 to 60 minutes away from school, which makes it harder. Later start times mean later wake-up times. This would mean better health, grades, and attendance. School should start later in the day.

Later school times would lead to better health. When children’s bodies start changing, their sleep schedule changes too. This is called phase delay. This can shift the body's internal clock back up to two hours. This makes it even harder for kids to get enough sleep. Children and teens need at least 8 to 11 hours of sleep. Without the required sleep, the body will not function properly. If this becomes a big problem, it could end up affecting a person's health greatly. If school were to start later, students wouldn’t have to worry about their sleep.

School starting later means better sleep, which means better grades. When kids get more sleep, their bodies function better. When their body is fully functioning it makes it easier to learn and take things in. This can improve grades. A study showed that a group of students' grades improved 4.5% after school times were delayed. Other studies show that later school times improved overall test grades and ACT scores. Over many studies and tests, scientists and doctors have concluded that later school start times mean better grades.

Another reason school should start later is because it would improve attendance. According to a new study, high schools that start later than 8:30 AM are linked to better attendance rates and Graduation rates. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends schools start no later than 8:30 AM. According to Pamela McKeever and Linda Clark, they found that after two years of delayed school times, attendance and graduation rates increased several points. Delaying school times would not only be beneficial to students, but also all of society.

Some people may agree that school should not start later. This is understandable, they may say that it is easier for adults' schedules, it gives kids more time in the afternoon for activities, or that it is too much work to change the times. Regardless, the benefits of later school start times much outweigh the risks of school not starting later.

In conclusion, school should start later in the day. Starting school later can improve a student's sleep and health. Many students' grades would be increased if school started later in the day. Later school starts would also improve a child’s attendance. “We can’t fight biology. We need to ensure that our schools respect the needs of students, and this includes their need for sleep.”-Isabel Cholbi.
