On this island where no adults are around to help these poor kids, they must find a way to survive and discover which of them must lead all the other kids. The leader should have the potential to guide with great acuity, that person should be no other than Piggy. Piggy is the best for being the leader because he has many excellent leadership qualities such as the ability to envision courses of action that other boys miss and the good acts of kindness.
Piggy envisioned that the conch could be used to establish order and organization.
In the story when he suggests to Ralph that he use the conch to summon the other boys on the island. Piggy says “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us—” (Golding 16). Using the conch to gather the boys together is the main tool of establishing unity. Furthermore Piggy has more than having envisions, he also has the act of kindness that every excellent leader should possess.
While Piggy is on the platform he notices that a littlun comes over to the platform and with a good act of kindness, he helps the littlun get up onto the platform. Golding asserted that “He jumped off the palm terrace into the sand and his trousers fell about his ankles; he stepped out of them and trotted to the platform. Piggy helped him up. ” (Golding 17). Piggy being kind has the littlun find trust and support through Piggy.
Although Piggy has these great aspects, others believe Piggy should not be a leader due to him being fat and not appealing. Nonetheless, though Piggy is fat does not mean he does not matter, because Ralph still talks to him. According to Golding “looking with more understanding at Piggy, saw that he was hurt and crushed. He hovered between the two courses of apology or further insult. “Better Piggy than Fatty,” he said at last,” (Golding 25). Ralph talking to Piggy shows that he is a fine companion that encourages Piggy.
In conclusion, Piggy has what it takes to become a leader due to the fact of him having the ability to envision courses of actions beforehand and possess true kindness to others. Piggy being enhanced with such good qualities makes him a true leader.
