Plastic Water Bottles Should Be Banned Persuasive Essay Sample

Recently there has been a contentious debate over the topic of banning or keeping plastic water bottles. Many people think bottled water is convenient because it is easy to carry and it is affordable, however this is not the case because plastic water bottles have many negative effects. Banning plastic water bottles should be an international concern because it has serious cultural and environmental consequences. 

To begin with, plastic water bottles have a very negative effect on the ocean as it causes ocean pollution. For example, bottled water is one of the largest contributors to ocean trash, and after a while the plastic and plastic water bottles can build up and block the sun for many animals including producers of the ocean who rely on sunlight to make food for themselves. Another negative effect bottled water has on the ocean is that they can hurt the animals who live in the ocean because animals may eat the plastic which can cause digestive blockage and can endanger their life. This goes to show the serious effects bottled water has on the ocean and the inhabitants who live in the ocean. 

Secondly, recycling plastic water bottles is a very long process which can take hundreds to thousands of years. Plastic is a material that is not biodegradable as it never really decomposes it just becomes microplastic. One reason microplastic is bad is that once it is released or broken away from a plastic water bottle it can travel through waterways and end up in an ecosystem. Microplastic can end up in the ocean and if an ocean animal eats it it can hurt their digestive system. Also microplastic carries harmful chemicals and if it can get into an animal's body it can cause sickness and the animal can be in danger. 

Finally, bottled water is still relatively new. Plastic water bottles were made in 1947. That is less than 100 years ago, because plastic is still new, scientists haven’t found a way to break down plastic and not being able to break down plastic has been causing many major problems.
