A cellular phone working on a specific radio frequency is called the mobile phone, where the connections of the mobile radio frequency are operated by the telecom organizations. With the development in technology, modern science has introduced different new facilities and features to mobile phones. This study will shed light on the use of mobile phones and will analyze the wide range of facilities provided by modern mobile phones. The change in technology and its versatile usability has left different positive and negative impacts on society and the environment which will be discussed in this study.

The Positive Societal Impacts of Mobile Phones

The technology that has given us mobile phones has a number of positive utilizations or impacts on society which are as followed. Firstly, purveying instant communication. The technology of the telephone was developed to enhance the communication between two people from different geographical locations. However, this was limited to a certain place as the telephones were not carriable and the connectivity was based on cables. Mobile phones have solved this problem as the radio frequency-based technology enabled the device to be carriable which introduced the instant communication facility. This technology has connected multiple families and friends which has enhanced communication even further with the help of modern facilities such as messages, internet facilities, and video call facilities (Kuimova et al. 2018). 

Secondly, mobile phones have become a source of entertainment. In the modern age, the use of the mobile phone is not limited to the communication system only. Whereas mobile phones have been an integrated part of our lives in which we seek amusement as well as distractions. Therefore, the multimedia facility has enabled mobile phones to bring entertainment to users of all ages. The big screens of modern mobiles allow people to enjoy movies, videos, different programs and so on. Whereas the intense camera performance allows the users to capture memories through photo and video modes. Alongside these facilities, mobile phones allow the users to enjoy music and play high definition games as well.

Lastly, mobile phones provide academic help to students. In the modern age, the facilities of mobiles have made it an essential part of academics. Although the use of mobile phones was increasing to provide online classes, the utilization of the mobile phones increased rapidly during the covid19 pandemic as the education system fully gave importance towards the digital system in providing education whilst staying at home to help contribute to the social distancing guidelines (Koohestani et al. 2018). In addition, internet facilities have enables the students to enhance their knowledge by searching data on the internet. Therefore, search engines such as Google have helped students from all around the world to acquire adequate knowledge.

The Negative Societal Impacts of Mobile Phones

Despite the positive side of mobile phones, several negative factors have affected society which are as followed. Firstly, it’s the effect on the teens and children. In this modern age, the availability of mobile phones has enabled families to make the mobiles a playing mate for toddlers all the way up to adolescents. Therefore, it has become easy for parents to keep their children occupied by simply giving them a mobile phone. However, the attachment of the kids increases with the mobiles, and the long hours in front of the mobile screen leave a negative impact on the psychological order of the children (Nath, 2018). In addition, children having high engagement with mobiles affects the interaction they have with their parents, which becomes the reason behind the different psychological disorders

Secondly, the negative effects that mobile phones have on education. The largest effect the mobile phones have caused is observed among students and teens. However, The use of mobile phones among teens or students has increased rapidly which has made mobile phones an essential part of their everyday life. Therefore, it works as a distraction for the student and hampers their education. In addition, the engagement of the students in the social sites has increased so much that it affects the productivity and the creativity of the students as well as their engagement in their studies. 

Lastly, the contribution of mobile phones in crimes. In the age of modern technology, criminals have become smart enough to use the latest technology to commit crimes and among them, the use of mobile phones is seen at a higher rate. However, in most cases, the crime is primarily involved with data breaching. Therefore, the hackers are seen to hack the mobiles of people to breach all the private data which affects the person economically and mentally (Nath, 2018). In addition, making harassment, threatening, and scam calls all involve the usage of mobile phones. On the other hand, financial data such as bank information are being stolen by breaching the data stored in the mobile. Furthermore, nowadays stalking women using mobile phones has increased, whereas in many cases private photos and videos are being leaked. Consequently, many cases as such have become a threat to the women, their reputation, mental health, and life. 

The Negative Environmental Impacts of Mobile Phones

The primary negative effect of mobile phones is associates with the manufacturing of mobile phones, where the waste materials are the reason behind the environmental disbalance. Furthermore, during the manufacturing process, the energy consumption is so heavy that it generates a huge amount of CO2 which affects the environmental balance. However, in the use of mobile phones, the data carriers are the electromagnetic radiation which is continuously interfacing the biological system. As a result, a number of different species of birds, bees, and so on are decreasing rapidly (Premial & Eldhose, 2018). Moreover, This radiation can also affect human health, especially children and elders.

In conclusion, from the previous discussion, it is seen that mobile phones have both positive and negative effects on the animal and the human society. Furthermore, The instant communication facility has connected the family and friends residing in different geographical locations. Moreover, modern technology has introduced facilities such as messages voice messages, and video calls which has increased the connectivity amongst people. However, several negative defects are seen as well such as harassment of women, scams, fraud cases, and data breach. Nevertheless, the negative effect is also observed amongst students as they are getting more and more distracted from their studies. Hence it can be concluded that modern technology and mobile phones have different uses and the effect of this technology is highly dependent on the purpose of the users.
