In this essay I will discuss the negative and positive sides of the social media. Is it good, bad or a bit of both, maybe? This may have an enormous affect upon teenager’s personal lives and the society they live in, in a bad or good direction, since roughly everyone uses the internet.

Social media is a dreadful cancer.

Everyday millions upon millions of teenager’s waste their pointless and dumb lives staring at a screen. Social media affects teens in many negative ways. Firstly, it is distracting, and teenagers prioritize it above other errands. It makes teenagers procrastinate and deprioritize other more important activities like homework, sleep, social calls and etcetera. But, why? Social media distracts you with quick and interesting information cast after your interests. Tiktok, Instagram, YouTube, social media and their algorithms specialize in identifying what captivates teenagers’ short attention span. Every single teenager has a personalized social media account molded to their interests. Therefore, they may prioritize it above sleep in a school night, their homework, practicing math and other real activities in the physical world. In addition, you get force fed others amazing and perfect lives, while you lay in your comfortable bed being idle. This can dull down their social skills, which can make them depressed and bitter towards the world.

Secondly it can be used to radicalize the youth. Imagine if Goebbels had the internet. With the internet you can manipulate the thoughts of the people into being a collective hivemind of groupthink, where any dissidents are eliminated. All you must do is to censor information on social media and the internet. This is a dream that can come to reality soon if it hasn’t already. Because easy access to information gives the ones who control it ultimate power beyond belief. Who controls social media and other mediums also controls the youth. In addition, it may make the youth uncritical if they get used to social medias and the internet as an all-knowing God. Also, the ones who control the algorithms can with the snap of a finger turn radicalize the youth by promoting certain content above other.

Social media is transforming human society to an enlightened plain of existence.

Social media is social and informative, its in the name. It is inherently good as it binds information and humans together. Firstly, it is social and connects humans together in a web of social information. You can video call your grandpa, and while gaming with your friends, without even moving out the door. You can be completely isolated physically, but social in a community. It lets you share ideas and organize with your equals no matter where they are located. You be active in your seldom interest that no one physically near you enjoy. In addition, you can also find and experience other hobbies.

Secondly, the internet lets the youth find information on a wide spectrum within seconds. It educates and informs the public and youth promoting critical thinking.

I conclusion, think there are many good and bad sides to social media that need to be addressed by the public. I think that having children view the world out of a social media lens distorts reality in a negative manner. I think that teenagers should be thought about critical thinking in school to prevent radicalization and a unrealistic view of the world. I am ignorant of any measures to prevent this as time is short.
