In 2021, the word quarantine has its own new definition. To most, it is seen as a bad thing that ruins relationships and tears people apart. Studies have been taken that show that, “an elevated percentage of participants enjoyed new positive experiences to a high degree, such as to learn to value outdoor activities more (more than 50% of the sample), to take more interest in people, to value more the importance of interpersonal relationships, to be more interested in the future, to appreciate the value of dedicating more time to the family, and so on. Some participants also appreciated discovering new hobbies or to practice more religious or spiritual activity” (Sandin, ex al.). Despite the popular belief that covid has only made things worse, quarantine gave millions of individuals time to find new hobbies; to find things to better their personal lifestyle; and better time management whether it's with work, school, or activities.

Covid has required schools to make arrangements to fit the students’ and staffs’ needs to keep everyone safe and healthy. Many “teachers are not immune to the vulnerabilities due to COVID-19 since they had to discontinue teaching immediately after lockdown. However, they looked for ways to still communicate to families, colleagues, and a few of their students who are accessible online” (Talidong, ex al). Teachers made themselves available to not only the students but to the families as well to help as best they could to ease their children back in the school habitat with as little as possible anxiety involved. One would think that being able to work in your pajamas at home with everything being online would make people happy, but “it appears that those more satisfied with telework are younger and middle-aged employees, who can combine telework with work in the office and who have sufficient professional and telework experience (teleworking before the quarantine). In the meantime, older generations who worked virtually three or more days a week before the quarantine were less satisfied with telework, especially those whose entire work was transferred to a virtual communication and collaboration environment exclusively during the quarantine period” (Raišienė, ex al.). Not everyone did enjoy the pleasure of getting to work from home but the ones that did, tended to be in the younger age category.

The 2 month quarantine caused by the rapid spread of covid gave people time to better themselves both physically and emotionally. With all of this new free time, there was a “significant percentage of participants who increased their frequency by 3–4 times per week in swimming during the quarantine” (Alfawaz). The extra time that was now available to all in quarantine was used by some to workout and become an overall healthier person. People saw this time as an opportunity that has “led to increases in population-level interest in and engagement with physical activity” (Ding, ex al.). People all over the world were given months of time to focus on themselves and the people they care about most.

A wonderful way to spend free time is by finding new hobbies. A survey was taken by Denison University that states that “a total of 183 survey responses were collected. Of these responses, 139 respondents reported having access to a kitchen during both the 2020 quarantine and Summer 2019” (Pitstick). It was a great opportunity to find new recipes that can make someone a healthier individual. Other people took a different approach on how to find a new thing to keep them busy. “The COVID-19 pandemic created a time of uncertainty for individuals across the globe. As a result, the pet industry saw an increase in pet ownership as individuals sheltered-in-place. Past studies have found pets provide companionship and happiness for humans” (Miller). Pets are a great way to fill up time because most pets require a lot of work.

Even through a stressful couple months, people found positive ways to stay healthy and keep busy. People who lived at home with their families also seemed to grow closer to one another. Although covid did bring times of distress and worry, there were positive aspects that individuals were given time to  learn and achieve.
