Songs. A melody which exceptionally conveys the message that the author wishes to dispatch to the audience. Songs can dispatch anything from emotions, messages, to stories; nearly anything you wish to communicate can be interfaced through a song. In particular some songs can concern the topics of loss or healing. Brennan Utley uses these emotions in order to exhibit to the audience a positive message. In the song Better Days Upon Us Brennan Utley conveys to the audience that although loss is inevitable, life is incessantly changing, in addition to life changing for the better. The song Better Days Upon Us by Brennan Utley is particularly aesthetically pleasing because of the positive reinforced theme of how the world is continually changing.

Change is significant. Every second of every day it happens whether we choose to accept it or not. Arnold Bennett once said “Any change, even a change for the better is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts”. Change is not accustomed to your measure of comfort, ultimately inescapable. The idea of change is utilized in almost every song genre. From the song Night Changes by One Direction to I am Changing by Jennifer Hudson. These two songs are very notable but they don’t achieve the metaphorical level of which Better Days Upon Us does. Better Days Upon is a song written by Brennan Utley which uses various comparisons and metaphorical devices to communicate  the concepts of positive and negative change. Brennan does this very effectively by appealing to almost all audiences with this simple but unique song. Better Days Upon Us uses simple devices to do so, Brennan utilizes the concept of clouds to make a comparison to hard times and then uses the sun to symbolize promising times. The two songs mentioned earlier don’t achieve this metaphorical type of storytelling although they are all of the same genre; change and time go hand in hand which is why a song based around time and its changes is much more aesthetically pleasing than a personal anecdote. The universal themes in Better Days Upon Us are pertinent to almost all, making it such an uplifting as well as relatable song to listen to.

Throughout Brennan Utley’s song Better Days Upon Us he conveys the reality of change and its effects on his emotions. You begin to comprehend this theme when you look into distinct stanzas of the song. In the second stanza of the song Better Days Upon Us the lyrics proclaim, “ I see a cloud’s a-comin’, And it’ll come again, But I’m feeling pretty good cause, Cause you were my friend,”. This verse established the positive perspective that Brennan has towards loss and change. Brennan uses the “cloud’s a-comin” as a metaphor for the fact that tough times may come and come again, however he’s ok because “you were my friend”. He uses the term “were” when referring to his friend which could signify that he may no longer have this friendship. Instead of Brennan being in despair that he no longer has his friend he exhibits that he is grateful for the friendship that he once had. This is particularly aesthetically pleasing seeing that it presents a universal theme of gratitude which depending on emotion is ever-changing. Once again presenting Brennan's theme of change but in this specific stanza he uses it in a positive context. However, not all the stanzas of this song begin with a positive approach. In the last stanza of the song Better Days Upon Us the lyrics state “Worse days are upon us. They ain't lookin’ too good, but days can always change. You know that's well understood”. This verse establishes that change isn't always positive and the author has come to terms with that. Although the author makes the realization that change isn’t always for good, but instead he refutes his negative mindset and contemplates how change could benefit him for the better.

In conclusion Better Days Upon Us written by Brennan Utley is aesthetically pleasing because of the reinforced theme of positive change. Brennan uses the themes of gratitude as well as negativity in order to fabricate the positive theme of “Better Days Upon Us”. This song was generic but also unique simultaneously which is a portion of what made this song so wonderful to listen to. Although times may be rough, it's crucial to remember that there are Better Days Upon Us.
