President Joseph R Biden Jr. Inauguration Speech Analysis

On January 20th, 2021, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. gave his Inaugural Address to the nation while standing on the West Front of the Capitol building. In his speech, Biden shared his ambitions and aspirations for the nation while he takes the title of President of the United States. An occurring word that Biden uses generously in his speech is the word unity. Unity is defined by the state of being one. President Biden as well as many presidents before him have turned to the Bible for scripture to include in their inaugural addresses. In the King James Bible, unity is implied through many scriptures as well as specifically being mentioned in three verses. 

Additionally, there are many forms of unity in the Bible. Unity in the church, family, and relationships. Many verses talk about unity. For instance, John 13:35 of the Bible says, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love on to another.” This verse demonstrates the second Commandment that Jesus has given His people; love your neighbor as yourself. Further, John 13:35 implies that loving one another is an example of God's love for His followers. Another verse that talks about unity is Philippians 2:2, which says, “Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord of one mind.” This verse has Paul talking about the joy that came when the Philippians showed unity. They were united by having the same love, being in one accord, and of one mind. Finally, another verse that talks about unity is Galatians 3:28. It says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” In this verse, Paul is telling Christians that they are all united in Christ. They are all one despite their nationality or gender. Each of these verses is an excellent example of unity as they each have the theme of unity within their wording.

Furthermore, many verses broadly discuss unity, however, there are only three verses in the bible that distinctly talk about unity. Those verses are Ephesians 4:3, Ephesians 4:13, and Psalm 133:1. Ephesians 4:13 says, “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ. This verse means that by growing in the knowledge of Jesus we will be united in Him. Ephesians 4:3 says, “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” This scripture means that by being united as believers in the Spirit we must keep the peace by walking in the Spirit. Psalm 133:1 says, “Behold, how good and how pleasant is it for brethren to dwell together in unity.” This scripture tells us that unity is good, and it is pleasant for brethren, meaning of the same family. Here, brethren also means Christian family or God’s people. By being of the same family it creates unity because there is something in common. 

In conclusion, President Joe Biden gave his Inaugural Address on principles he saw fit for our nation. He discussed unity many times in his speech. The Bible consists of many scriptures discussing unity and exemplifies the many forms of unity. President Biden used the biblical theme of unity to cast his vision for America by simply stating that we as a nation need to become one. We need to become united. In recent years there has been a lot of hate and division throughout this wonderful country. Division such as race, gender, and beliefs. This has caused mass chaos in our country, however, if we just put all our hatred to the side and unite as one then there wouldn’t be so much hate. To be united means to care for one another and to show love for one another and that is exactly what President Biden is saying and what the Bible is saying. Unity is showing the love of Christ.
