Sacrifice, regret and desperation, this was how a young boy had to live during the Holocaust. Allan Gratz shows you the depth and sacrifices that are needed to succeed during dark times, but that not all actions come with rewards, no matter how much you preserve it. Micheal, a 13 year old is the Irish ambassador’s son, but he has a secret mission, join the SRD to help the Allies win WWII. Throughout the story of PROJEKT 1065, written by Allan Gratz, the red armband teaches you that hiding your identity may be necessary for survival and that sacrificing yourself has a bigger impact, but not all sacrifices come with a medal on its back.

On page one we’re introduced to the red armband, “And just like the SS, the most fearsome killers in all of the land, I wore a red arm band with a big black swastika  in the center of it, the hooked-cross symbol the Nazis plaster all over everything…” (Gratz 1). The red armband is a symbol to hide who you really are and obey the law, if it is not followed you will end up suffering or dead.

While Micheal is at the Hitler youth school his professor stops hiding and shows what he really feels about the war, and almost gets himself sent to an internment camp, “..And where his grandfather from? Czechoslovzkia, perhaps? Poland? He has never told us. Hmm. So perhaps not the best example.” (Gratz 103). “He’s crazy. He’s going to get himself taken into protective custody,” (Gratz 107). The text shows that Doktor Major Melcher is defiant but doesn’t necessarily want to be sent away, even though he doesn’t agree with the Nazis.

We’re shown how hard it is to restrain yourself when you have a hatred towards something, but Micheal has learned to keep his cool for the sake of the world. “I wanted nothing more than to pound Horst into a German pancake. But while the Nazis would give you a medal for punching and kicking your comrades, they’d sack you for attacking a superior officer. And like it  or not, that’s what Horst was to me in the Hitler Youth. And I wanted to stay in th Hitler youth - needed  to stick around, as a spy - so I swallowed my bile. ” (Gratz 42).  Through the novel we’re shown Micheal restraining himself and regretting even if he’s helping the Allies win the war.

While training to be in the SRD Micheal’s friend showed him the blueprints to an important airplane, Projekt 1065. Projekt 1065 was the plane Simon was trying to take photos for Britain but was shot down and wasn’t able to recover the film. “It was a big secret that could change the course of the war. Maybe change the fate of the world. And I had it right there in my hands.” (Gratz 76) “Projekt 1065.”.. “It doesn’t have any propellers, see? It has two jet engines.” (Gratz 77) This made Micheal’s mission even more important than it was before, and more dangerous as since he’s the Irish ambassador’s son and Irish is neutral it could cause more international tensions.

So when the novel is finished, the arm band is more than a piece of fabric, it’s the face of an enemy, but is also the reason to sacrifice yourself for the sake of the world, but hide your identity when being hunted like prey. At the end of the PROJEKT 1065  Michael and his family succeed, but are told that they cannot tell anyone about what they did, so he doesn't get a medal or public recognition. Micheal is reluctant but after some thought he understands why, because if he did Ireland would have to get involved in the war, publicly. For this reason you need to keep going, even if the world hates you, there will always be people who appreciate you and those who don’t, and even if they don’t use your best judgment to help those you love.
