Protect Our Planet Essay Example

As a STEM student, I want to look into different ways to protect and honor our planet. I am curiously passionate about scientific events, developments, and inventions. My interest began when I won an award in the third grade. I was given first place and was the only girl to do a presentation for the judges. It was at that time, I knew that science was a natural interest. Science has pushed me in the direction of thinking more logically and critically about everyday things around me. As I grew older, I realized the STEM field had a lack of representation, especially among women of color. When in my junior year of high school, I learned about physics and all the science and math that came with it, which was exciting and has become an utmost priority for me. 

I like the challenges that come from the field of science. I am open to any feedback, in order to better understand the world we live in. I have an ability to adapt and succeed, no matter the new topic, task, technology, or system that is used or implemented. I would like a future with being a leading professional within STEM industries. I believe in being true to your ethics, reaching for your passion, and leading by example. The journey I would take is to promote a positive shift toward sustainability in my chosen field of Atmospheric Physics with emphasis on our environment. 

Being an Afro-Indigenous young woman, I learned the respect is given to Mother Earth and Father Sky at an early age. I come from Dinetah, the Navajo Nation. In our Dine Creation story, there are many teaching stories that involve all living things, water, plants, animals, and the cosmos. These stories have instructions on describing the relationships we have with the environment. For our values include peace and harmony of mind in a spiritual aspect to give our appreciation. These Creation Stories often involve earth, nature, and the universe which are interdependent upon one another. With this knowledge I inherit, I believe in a balance that can be maintained with our relationship with our atmosphere. It would take a shift in our understanding of the weather, natural disasters, and clear communication of the big issue of climate change. 

To promote sustainability, I plan to bring forth new inventions that are renewable by design and eco-friendly. It is paramount that no further harm is done to our planet. Another avenue I would like to pursue is contributing to preserving our natural world through the science field, but also through advocacy and conservation. I want to make an impact, and that begins in acknowledging the Indigenous tribes and lifeways that have existed before current systems. I know that mother earth needs to be healed from all the toxicity coming from chemicals, pollution, and poor waste management. In order for that restorative process to continue, change needs to happen. I envision myself making a positive impact to protect our earth and a better future for generations to come.
