Protective Headgear Should Be Mandatory in Soccer Essay Example

When you participate in any sport, you risk injury. Although helmets cannot prevent all head injuries, studies have shown the use of headgear has reduced the level of severity of an injury. Head injuries in soccer usually result from a collision between two players, often when one or both is trying to head the ball. 

Studies have shown that wearing headgear does make a difference in reducing the impacts that players receive from head-to-head contact. Text 2 line 55 clearly states, “The highest percentage of head injuries are inflected mainly from head to head contact. It is so common in fact, that approximately nine girls suffer head injuries per 10,000 games or practices.” As we explore this information, I personally feel headgear most definitely should be mandatory in soccer, because they cannot only saves lives but saves careers as well.  

In text 2 line 60 - Skeen states, that the best of headgear significantly reduced the risk for concussion from head-to-head contact. At 3 meters per second, the risk was 10% without headgear and 5% with headgear. Skeen plans to keep pushing his headgear. “I just think that the number of head injuries needs to be reduced or the sport will die.”

Text 2 line 40 goes on to discuss how as many as 80% of soccer concussions result from player-to-player collisions, such as “heading duels”. Its common sense that putting something between a head and another hard surface— such as another head, an elbow, a goal post, or the ground—will protect the head.  

In conclusion, headgears are in fact a necessity and should be required when playing soccer. Text 4 line 5 says that some headgear can reduce the impact of a concussive blow by more than 70 percent.  Studies have shown that unlike sweatbands, these headgears are made with hardened polyurethane foam offering protection to the head from injury.
