Psychodynamics is a developing theory of how people’s reactions to events are based on their genetic and psychological past. Psychodynamics may seem like an unknown topic, but it’s one of the most popular theories. To clarify, one may think of Introverts and Extroverts. This is one of the most popular theories, mainly because it shows how little people knew about the way people think.

Many psychologists contributed to this study. As time went on, these impeccable psychologists were able to break down psychodynamics into two main categories. It would be called conscience motivation along with unconscious motivation. These varying levels of consciousness are being affected by the mind, personality, and psyche. Now knowing the basics, the psychologists were the ones to thank for this theory. Some of the more well-known psychologists were Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, John Bowlby, along with Mary Ainsworth. Those psychologists were some of the most famous psychodynamic psychologists. Each of them is standardized into some groups, which will be briefly discussed further down.

Sigmund Freud was one to theorize that psychological behavior is affected by the ego. In his book Engines of Human Behaviour, he uses the word Trieb, a german word that translates to instinct, or drive. He mainly thought of the Id, super-ego, as well as the ego. The Id is the instinctual desires, the super-ego is more of the criticizing and moralizing theme, the ego is more realistic and plays with the organization. These themes are what makes up people’s consciousness, and it makes them who they are. This theory goes by the name of psychoanalytic theory. And it would end up leading to future theorists. His writings would inspire people to have different opinions of the matter, and would ultimately change the way we see psychology to this day.

Introverts and Extroverts are one of the most well-known theories. It’s the theory of how people interact in certain situations. Jung wasn’t just known for this though, he was the theorist that came up with analytical psychology. Analytical psychology was composed of three main parts, the ego, the personal consciousness, not to mention the collective consciousness. The collective conscience was made up of the archetypes. These archetypes are defining one more into groups. Some of the group names are things like the Artist, Innocent, Ruler, Sage, and many more. Jung says that these categories are universal, being the psychic counterparts of instinct. He would later state that “The psyche tends toward wholeness.” Carl Jung was a big part in the making of psychodynamics, with the theory of analytical psychology right behind his studies.

Finally, the theory of attachment. This theory would be known to have two theorists, John Bowlby, with the addition of Mary Ainsworth. John Bowlby was also a follower of Freud and ended up furthering his research to come up with a different theory. Bowlby would be inspired by the Nobel Prize winner, founder of ethology, Konrad Lorenz. He was genuinely interested in the study of imprinting, on how a child could imprint the mother, like how the mother would imprint on the child. This study was mainly on birds because Lorenz was an animal behavior scientist. Mary Ainsworth was a student of Bowlby, while being his student they would study infant behaviors. And they developed the attachment theory. He would soon reject Freud’s theory of damage being caused by impulses the child would have. And would later state that it is from maternal deprivation. Meaning that the child would feel unsafe, or would be neglected. The contribution to parenthood Bowlby and Ainsworth had, was greatly appreciated and would be used to this day.

Psychodynamics could be a broad topic, mainly because of too much information. Also, it could have to deal with it’s still an ongoing theory. Many scientists have contributed to this study and this list could be endless. For this theory, we should thank Freud, since his studies would inspire many others such as Jung, Bowlby, along Ainsworth. These psychologists would later also be teachers of their practices and ideas. Psychodynamic theory is a big part of psychology and is studied all around the world
