The role of a registered nurse is to provide safe, high-quality healthcare that is derived from evidence-based practice. The primary goal of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) is to provide a resource for healthcare workers to learn about, promote and implement quality and safety into practice. QSEN has impacted the professional world of healthcare in different ways. One of the educational resources QSEN implemented was the Nurse Residency Program for the entire hospital system. This is a resource that impacted me personally. As a newer nurse, I participated in the year-long Nurse Residency Program and found it very helpful as I transitioned from a student nurse to a novice nurse. The purpose of this program is to provide new graduate nurses with skills to improve safety and patient outcomes, promote skill competency, improve job satisfaction and reduce nursing turnover (Williams et al., 2018, para. 1). The program required a group of new graduate nurses to participate in an evidence-based research project to improve patient safety throughout our hospital. It was our job to find an area of nursing practice that required improvement, discover a new plan of action, and implement new ways to positively improve care. This experience allowed me to practice my professional role in research by contemplating new ideas and implementing them into real healthcare scenarios to improve patient safety, satisfaction and outcomes.

Nurse Sensitive Indicators (NSI) are the foundation of nursing practice. NSI is broken down into three major categories: structural indicators, process indicators, and outcome indicators. Structural indicators represent safe staffing, the individual skill level of each nurse, and education/certifications. Process indicators represent quality assessment skills and intervention. Outcome indicators demonstrate the improvement of nursing care based upon a higher quantity of nurses versus a higher skill level of nurses (Nickitas et al., 2020, p. 173). Nursing indicators play a vital role in the quality of care that is produced from a unit as well as the effectiveness of teamwork and job satisfaction.

In the mid-1900s, syphilis was rampant in the population. There was a theory that symptoms presented differently among racial groups. Public health officials in Alabama decided to start an experimental trial among African American men in their county. The study included a group of syphilis-infected individuals as well as non-infected individuals. The study intended to record the disease process of untreated syphilis in the African American male population. Participants were told they were being treated for “bad blood.” The participants believed they were receiving experimental drugs that would provide better outcomes for their disease process. However, public healthcare providers were administering placebos. As the participants worsened and ultimately died while partaking in this research study, the healthcare providers with the Tuskegee project provided ineffective care (Isaacs, E. F., 2019, para. 3-4). The care provided in the Tuskegee project does not align with the goals of QSEN, NSI, and the ANA Code of Ethics. These three groups share the common goal of providing respectful, compassionate care while improving safety and health outcomes for patients. The events of the Tuskegee experiment do not align with the purpose behind these institutions. Withholding proper care from patients is unethical and against the job description of a healthcare provider. In addition to the denial of appropriate treatment, participants did not give formal consent for participation.

In this specific situation, the vulnerable population included low-income, African American males. Participants were provided incentives for including themselves in the study. The study did not include women or people of other racial backgrounds. I do not believe the benefits of this study outweigh the risks because most of the participants received false care, continued to worsen, and died. Participants continued to spread the infection to others in the community as they participated in the study. Ultimately the outcome of this study was not beneficial.

As a Christian, it is my belief to value the lives of others. Therefore it is in my beliefs to love others as God loves us and to do no harm. My views do not support the events of the Tuskegee study because the public health officials had no intention of providing help or safety to the vulnerable population in need. The study also did not demonstrate compassion or respect for the participants involved. The care providers in the study allowed for the suffering of their participants and did not attempt to assist their disease process. Since penicillin was a known treatment for syphilis at the time of the study, providers should have offered this treatment to the participants. As a Christian nurse, I constantly remind myself to view my patients as people rather than judge them for their health condition. Regardless of their story, they are still human. I must support them physically, psychologically, and spiritually throughout their care.
