Reason for Russia-Ukraine War Essay Example

As of February 23, 2022, Russia has invaded Ukraine. The news has traveled around the world, spreading fear to many as well as those who have to deal with this tragic event first-hand. Russia’s president, Putin has expressed his anger about how Russia doesn’t seem to have as much power as they could’ve. To put it into better perspective, Putin has been upset at the fact that Ukraine does not belong to Russia anymore, and he wants to get rid of democracy.

Nato

NATO is short for (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and their whole purpose is to “guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means”. It was formed back in 1949 in response to the downfall of economies in European nations, their struggles to secure security after World War II, and the fear of the Soviet Union expanding. NATO is made up of 30 European nations, along with the United States and Canada. Russia is not a part of NATO because of past conflicts involving the Soviet Union, or what can also be known as, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Ukraine also has not earned its spot with the organization because of a formerly Ukrainian president’s refusal to join back in 2010. There were also some concerns from Germany and France about Ukraine joining. But in response to the current war between Russia and Ukraine, NATO has sent their response team for the first time to try and prevent any incoming attacks from both sides.

USSR 

The U.S.S.R. was a Marxist- Communist state that was formed in post-revolutionary Russia. U.S.S.R is an abbreviation for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and is known as the Soviet Union as well. It was created after a treaty was signed back in 1922, between Ukraine, Russia,Transcaucasia, and Belarus. The goal was to spread communism, a type of government that the US didn’t like. Eventually the state grew to hold up to 15 Soviet Socialist Republics. Then sometime in 1991, the Soviet Union came to an end because their communists government failed. 

History of Ukraine 

In the 5th and 6th centuries AD, an ethnolinguistic group called Slavs, moved into Ukraine.   Swedish vikings sailed their way into Eastern Europe sometime in the 9th century - some deciding to settle in Ukraine as well. A Viking named Oleg captured Kyiv in 882. Kyiv then became the capital of a powerful state. But the state divided up in the 11th and 12th centuries. Over time bits and pieces of Ukraine continued to get stolen by Russia, Austria, and Poland.
