Imagine a classroom where a seminar is being held. Everyone is talking loudly, trying to voice their opinions, but there’s this one person there who only speaks enough to get a grade of 100 and now is just sitting there quietly. No one else even realizes that this person is there. They are the ‘Quiet’ ones, as most people call them. The ones who are thought to be too shy or too scared to speak. There’s a name for them, too: Reticent people.

Like any word that exists, the word 'reticent' has both a negative and a positive connotative meaning. Reticent can be defined as either quiet or restrained. A person who is described as being reticent usually does not talk much. It can also refer to someone who doesn't want to draw attention to themselves or who prefers seclusion to other people. Reticent people are the type of people who know more than most people would expect them to. They are the ones some people go to vent to. There is an old saying that goes along the lines, “The quieter you become, the more you can hear.” Meaning, they hear things that most loud or talkative people usually miss.

Reticent people are everywhere in this world, and one might not see them because they blend in wherever they are. They are what most say, “a fly on the wall.” They hear and see everything, yet they are never seen. The misconception many people seem to make is mistaking their quietness for shyness. It is not because they are scared to speak that they stay quiet or reserved, but because they choose to. They are comfortable in silence and isolation and do not need noise around them to make them feel ‘safe’. They feel comfortable focusing on their inner thoughts and ideas, rather than whatever’s happening externally. Those same quiet people usually turn out to be leaders and bright minds of the future.

Though most of today’s society is in a fear-hate relationship with silence, reticent people relish the presence of it. In moments of quietness or silence, they discover or even notice minute details in the people and world around them. Abraham Linclon once said, “It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubt of it.”  Being quiet doesn't necessarily mean you are not ignorant, but it does hide it. A lot of people judge others based on what they say, and most of the time what comes out of people’s mouths doesn’t make them look good or educated. It is widely thought that quiet or reserved people are some of the smartest and wisest people out there. So next time you see a reticent person, remember that they're probably one of the most perceptive people you’ll ever meet.
