Tell me, why are you the right fit to work here? Yea, that’s what the last few jobs asked me when interviewing me. To be honest, I always thought the best answer was to just make up one. I never gave much thought to how I could be so impactful on a job as just an individual. Learning new things made me accountable for how I could change not only the structure of the job, but also the structure of myself too. Moving on from job to job never made the hiring process any easier. However, being counted out was never something new for me. That’s why using my experiences from my past and present jobs made me choose the ever so competitive field of nursing for my radiant future career.

"My pleasure", said my then younger self working at Chick Fil A, but only there would I find my passion for helping people. To understand this story, we must rewind two years back to Chick Fil A on Thornton Road. I was one of countless applicants trying to get into select view positions available. Going through the tour of the establishment, I never saw anyone who resembled my ethnic background. In fact, the hiring manager implied the only reason I was picked was because my name sounded Caucasian. These factors minimized my chances of believing I would be hired. Nevertheless, given all the circumstances, somehow I managed to get hired. The first day for me was a learning curve. I never knew how following basic protocol while serving customers could be the most rewarding feeling in the world. While working there, we were taught to always be selfless towards others, that when dealing with customers, their mood lies in our hands, which will only be reflected based on the impact we have on them. Everyday brought a different perspective on how I could change someone’s life, whether it’s helping an old lady back to her car, dressing up as the mascot for parties, or even just doing the simple things like asking about someone’s day. Even though the odds weren’t in my favor at first, I found a purpose of helping people with customer service through Chick Fil A and that is an experience that will always last forever which played a part in showing me how to be a selfless driven employee for future jobs to come.

"Mr. manager," says my best friend, Kim, who likes to think I was born to lead. Me and her work at my current job, Autobell Carwash, where if you ask her, my astonishing success at the company is showing that I’m on pace to be the next manager in the next two weeks. I say the word astonishing because I have only been with the establishment for three and half months. In contrast to what would sound like a success story, it didn’t start off that way. Working here is like a food chain and I quickly realized I was at the bottom of it. My title given was "crew member" with the responsibility of washing cars, nothing more and nothing less. You were only looked at if you did something good or bad. Clearly, I was a long way away from my predecessor, Chick Fil A. However, like at Chick Fil A, I looked for what experience or skills I could gain from working here. The skill that I would learn and acquire would be the ability to lead. We run our car wash based on procedure and title management. The crew members will wash cars following a precise procedure. The crew leaders will oversee the car after it is done, and the manager will be responsible for the oversight of customers, procedures, and the whole lot. To make it to the top, you must stand out from the rest by taking the initiative to complete tasks before being given them by your superior, while showing the best performance in the wash. That formula right there was what I followed every day to rise in the ranks to assume my current title as manager-in-training. Having success through hard work allows you to experience things you would never see. For example, in my case, I was able to get a seat at the table during meetings and voice my opinions. I was also given opportunities to meet higher-ranking officials throughout the company, the most important of which is being responsible for keeping a positive, unified team while running my own shift. Being a leader is a position I hold dearly to my heart and will always be glad to share my journey with other crew members to motivate them, because I know what it is like to not be acknowledged, so that’s something I can relate to them and use my position for positive outlooks on other people's lives.

The past is a part of who you are and who you will become in the future. That’s a philosophy I choose to live by while working on earning my future bachelors nursing degree. I will take what I went through with my professional career and apply it to that career because there were lessons to be learned and to be gained. Instead of ignoring all of my wonderful and terrifying experiences, I decided to channel them into the brilliant nurse I will become. While achieving my goal, I will be able to treat patients and lead charges with my fellow coworkers while always providing a remarkable customer service experience. So, just because I may have a long resume of jobs doesn’t discourage or count me out, because I know what skills I obtained from them and will use them for my next one. In summary, I’m grateful for all the experiences I had. Even though I faced great adversity, it only made me a stronger Nathan for tomorrow's future. I will always use my inherited traits of selflessness and leadership to provide the best customer satisfaction as a future nurse.
