Looking back at my education K through 12 many of my experiences have contributed to the person I am today. Within this paper I will be again reflecting on the positives and negatives of my education I have received so far as well as some of the things I feel we should be learning more about.

Through out my education I have always questioned why I need to take some of the classes that I have taken or learned some of the things that I have. But there are many classes that I have taken that I didn’t need to that I also enjoyed. One of the best classes I ever took was drafting. This was a class that taking parts or objects and drawing them to scale with a lot of precision. After taking this class it led me to the world of architecture which I am currently studying. Another positive I always liked was silent reading in English class, it allowed me to read what I wanted for once and not the standard books that we had to read for common core. I always thought the books that we were forced to read were quite boring and I would always struggle to engage with them. Another good thing about my formative education had to be elective classes, I feel I learned more in the classes that I picked then any of the classes that were mandatory. Some of the negatives of my formative education had to be math teachers. I felt that most of the math teachers at my school were not that good. This might have been down to me and my understanding of math, but I would always here kids complain about how bad every math teacher is. Another negative was having teachers that seemed un-interested in what they were teaching. When you have a teacher like this it ruins the class and makes it awful for everyone. One last negative must be the lack of real-world teaching or classes that we can apply to the real-world.

Learning about the real-world is what I would have focused my formative education on. I believe that knowing the basics of reading, writing, math, science, and history are very important but up to a certain point. As written by Kathry Tuggle she stated “An overwhelming majority of teens --87% -- admit they don’t know much about personal finance…” this is an alarming statistic that should be better taken care of coming out of high school. If 87% of high schoolers can’t manage their money that means they will never be able to have finical freedom. The freedom that comes with knowing how to manage your money can make you feel like you have escaped the 9-5 average job. Other ways of achieving finical freedom are through stocks and bonds. According to Tim Ranzetta “adults younger than 35 with money in the stock market in 2017 and 2018 stands at 37%...” This study is a larger age range, but it still shows how little young people are using their money to make money in the market. Although I could see why they would be hesitant because they have lived though the 2008 economic collapse that devastated the stock market. After the crash is when you really should have invested. But high schoolers or young adults that don’t really know what the market is or how to use it missed out on a great opportunity to invest into a low market and make huge returns. Many of the same people that are in the 18-35 years old age range also came out of high school lacking knowledge on how to apply for a loan or what types of loans there are. Annie Nova states “More than 70% of students surveyed don’t know that loans from the government are subsidized.” There are two types of loans that many college going kids will encounter, subsidized and unsubsidized. Subsidized loans are from the government and won’t add interest to your loan while in college. Whereas unsubsidized loans mean you are responsible for interest as soon as you take on the loan. The interest on the loan can add up very quick as typical interest is 2.94%-6.79% over your loan period. Finally, the last thing I really would have loved to know more about is mindfulness. Highschool is a very stressful time in our life and maybe even more then ever. We must deal with social media and everything being at our fingertips, so we are affected by things much differently now. If we had classes that taught us mindfulness practices, we would potentially see the stress levels of high school students decrease. Learning how to master simple techniques like meditation or simply reflecting on our day would allow us to take time to our self and be with our own thought. This time that we have given to our self can allow us to decrease the levels of stress and increase overall happiness in life.

The experiences throughout my formative schooling have made me the person I am today. Although I believe they system can be improved by learning more about real-life applications.
