Being young in 2021, is both very difficult and kind of easy.

The world has come a long way since when our parents were young (the 80s/70s/90s), and most people are way more accepting then back then. But at the same time, it’s very difficult because not everyone is accepting. Internet, social media, tikok, snapchat… is slowly taking over our lives as we get older, screen times ranging from 1 hour when your 9 years old to 6-8 when you’re 14. Most of us are accepting, but the ones that will go behind a screen and say things about you, aren’t. Either if it’s on a regular account, anonymous account or on an anonymous question poll (example: yolo) absolutely everything is perverted. Girls can’t do anything without being judged!

A girl can walk to school wearing a ponytail and get comments about it.

She can walk down the street in a school uniform, and a car might honk at her.

She can even do something as simple as wear glasses or eat a banana, and people will make it perverted and comment about it.

The Beauty standards are way too high.

-have a small nose.

-have a kylie Jenner body at 12

-don’t weigh over 60kg.

-You must have big thigs and wide hips.

But you can’t have hip dips or stretch marks.

-You must be skinny.

But you can’t have an ed, or be insecure when someone tells you to ‘eat a burger’

All these standards are piling up, and they’re almost impossible to fulfil at such a young age.

The same things can happen to boys.

-be tall, at least 178cm

-have muscles, but not too many.

-don’t be skinny

Everyone will judge you on everything you do! If you eat in a way, breathe in a way, talk in a way, or even just walk!

Being a teenager has never been easier, and difficult at the same time.

The easy things like going to the mall or just hanging out with your friends are still there. Of course, you’re mostly on your phone when you hang out. Maybe you will watch a movie or talk about a book. Forgetting for just a minute about all the standards.

Being Young/short story

It was a normal day; I woke up and checked all my socials. Snapchat, Instagram, and twitter, before getting up from bed to get ready.

I walked into the bathroom and decided to wash my face, like I do every single day. After washing my face, I brushed my teeth and decided to try and find something to wear.

It was relatively hot outside, so I decided to wear a skirt and a halter top. I put the clothes on and looked in the mirror, judging myself for 6 minutes before starting on my hair. I decided to put a few rollers in my hair before walking downstairs to make breakfast.

Deciding on avocado toast, I cut up some avocados. And decided that I wanted to add scrambled eggs.

After eating I walked back to my room and decided to take the rollers out of my hair. Brushing through my hair a bit before putting on some mascara and, a bit concealer to hide my under-eye bags. I had stayed up the whole night to study for a test we had today, so I didn’t get a lot of sleep.

After studying a bit more, I realised I would be late for the bus. So, I quickly packed my backpack, and put some money in my pockets, for lunch.

Running downstairs, I said a quick goodbye to my parents before closing the door. And running to the bus. Just as it was about to leave, I made it.

I lived relatively far away from the school, so I was the first one on it. Finally, after 50 minutes we arrived at school. I quickly found my best friend, and we decided to walk in together.

Walking in I got a few stares from a few passing students and teachers. Wondering what was wrong I turned to my best friend and sked if I had something on my face, she quickly said no after examining my face, and just shrugged.

When the bell rang, we parted ways as she had science and I had history.

Making my way into the history class the teacher wasn’t there yet, so I just sat down and started a conversation with the person that was sitting next to me, when the teacher came in., he took one look at me and asked if I had any spare clothes.

I asked why, and he said, ‘it’s because you’re distracting your fellow students’ as if I was the problem to them getting ‘distracted’ he gave me one last warning, before sending me to the principal’s office. The principal also being a grown man decided to ask my parents to get me some new clothes.

When my parents came, they asked what rules I broke in the dress code. They got handed a list circling 5 of 40 rules.

Looking on the other side of the page I saw 4 more rules. Wondering what they were I flipped the paper and saw the headline. ‘Boys dress code’ immediately wondering why I had 10x more.
