When it came to the question of what is the first, most important aspect to me personally, the characteristics and behaviors that motivate and guide my life choices, the first value that came to mind was kindness. Memaw instilled kindness in me, as it was one of her virtues and she taught me to always be compassionate. To be kind, you must also be friendly, generous, and considerate. While kindness has a connotation of meaning someone is naive or weak, that is not the case. Being kind can be challenging when it comes to someone who is being unkind, but with remaining friendly, you show strength and with this I believe that good karma will come around for you, and those who do not choose kindness will endure what they deserve. 

The next value that is important to me is loyalty. Having loyalty leads to a sense of trust and security, which in turn creates strong bonds. Being loyal will also give you good karma. To me being loyal has become a more essential behavior to me, as I have been around those that have cheated and lied to their partners, family, and friends which has tainted their relationships to the point of where the relationships have broken. A relationship can not be healthy or strong without loyalty and trust, which both go hand in hand.

One other value I hold dear is empathy, which is another attribute Memaw taught me. Being empathetic is of great worth to me because of my first value of kindness. Due to her inability to empathize, my stepsister is a very rude and cruel individual, which has caused some serious issues with our relationship. To be empathetic you understand and share the feelings and emotions of another, which is crucial when trying to help them and with having healthy relationships.

Being family-oriented has always been important to me. Despite my inability to make strong, lasting friendships, my family has been a major support in my life. There are certain family members who helped shape me into the person I am today, as well as some with whom I have a close relationship. With those I have a deep relationship with, I can share freely without feeling judged, disapproved, or disgusted. Without my family, I would not be the “sweet and caring” person that people consider me to be. 

The final personal value in my top five list would be friendship. With the few friendships I have been able to carry on throughout my life, they have become my support systems and some I would consider family by choice. Over the years, my best friend has helped me endure major life events; such as moving halfway across the country, break-ups, grieving for loved ones, and undergoing mental, physical, and emotional health diagnoses that have affected my life. Without her, I would have not made certain life choices. I will never know what would have happened without her, but I know the events that occurred with her in my life have been bearable and I can not see me making positive life choices without her.

When it came to the question of what is the first most important thing to me when it comes to work, the characteristics and behaviors that motivates and guides my choices, the first values that came to mind were accountability and success. Being accountable is a quality that your coworkers and manager look for. If you can't be accountable, then you won't have a job. Being reliable also builds your relationships within the workforce. Being successful brings happiness, which is an essential emotion for your health.

When it comes to success, it is about setting goals and achieving those goals. You will gain achievements and growth throughout the workplace, which I value. By achieving goals, I am able to feel like I am growing professionally. I then feel that I have a sense of purpose in my work life, which leads me to work harder. As you grow, you develop more skills and can inspire your fellow coworkers to follow in your footsteps. Personally, I strive to be the best version of me within the workplace, and achievements and growth allow me to sense that feeling of accomplishment which will allow me to do more work and to strive to accomplish more.

The last essential behavior to have within the workplace is establishing friendships. Friendships within the office allow you to have more support systems and to have a healthy environment. If I do not build friendships within the workplace, I will not be happy and then I will not accomplish any goals or achievements I or my boss has set in place for me to fulfill. Friendships in the workplace let me have the ability to seek help within the workplace which fills me with a sense of security and sense of belonging at work.

The National Association of Social Work (NASW) has core values which are, service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. My personal and work values of friendship within the workplace and in my personal life and being family-oriented can relate to the NASW core value of the importance of human relationships. In social work, it is important that social workers understand relationships between and among people are an essential part of change. Social workers aim to promote, restore, maintain, and enhance the well-being of people by strengthening relationships among individuals. A social worker should not have a friendship with their client, as it must remain professional and a friendship with a client is a violation in ethics but having friendships within your workplace can allow you to have more resources for the client and assist you in any assistance you may need. Being family-oriented can also help you relate to your client, as you can seek positions following into assisting families.

For the NASW core value of integrity it aligns with my values of being accountable in the workplace and for being loyal in my personal life. The dignity and worth of the person align with my personal values of kindness and empathy. With integrity, social workers behave in a trustworthy manner and with that it allows for you to be loyal to your client which will then allow the client to be loyal to you. As a social worker, it's your responsibility to ensure clients' well-being and worth are respected. 

The NASW core value of competence can relate to the final work values I have of growth, success, and achievement. Being competent is to be knowledgeable and to enhance and develop their skills of practice. Competence is growth and success within the social work field. Achievement goals during a social worker’s assessment is based on competence.
