I believe in completing jigsaw puzzles. During COVID, I finished a lot of puzzles. I didn’t just work on the puzzles, but I completed them. When you complete a jigsaw puzzle, you first dump all the pieces out onto the table. Then, you start with the easiest part, finding the corner pieces. Next, you complete the border, getting an overview of what the finished puzzle is going to look like. Finally, working top to bottom, you fill in the puzzle. This is the most laborious part yet the most rewarding, as you see the beauty of finalized puzzle. While some moments can be tough, if you persevere, the reward is completely worth the adversity. I believe in completing jigsaw puzzles.

Metaphorically, on a normal night in March, I dumped all the pieces onto the table, or I got a concussion. It was a severe concussion, and sometimes I couldn’t do the most basic actions. I was having trouble finding the border pieces. I wanted to lay in bed. I wanted to not be in gruesome, tiring pain. I wanted to give up on the puzzle. But one day, I was tired of laying in bed, tired of wondering when I was going to get my next big headache. I craved to solve the puzzle, I desired to finish it. I chose to solve the puzzle, to abolish my concussion. I believe that persevering through the strenuous times in life has shaped me into the person I am today.

There are many other instances in my life that have the same impact on my life today. I have struggled with acne, and while I have some of the acne under control, I am nowhere near having perfect skin. It has been a struggle sometimes, I have had to try out multiple different topicals and creams to achieve the “perfect skin”. I still don’t have clear skin. While this is a much bigger problem than just a puzzle, there are many elements that are similar. I have completed the border of the puzzle, but it wasn’t as easy as it always is. I had to try out many different pieces to see one that fits. Sometimes, I thought that I had found a puzzle piece, but then I realized that it didn’t work. I could have put the pieces back into the box and not tried to make my skin better, but I would have never known what the end result would have look like.

While it can take on many forms, perseverance is extremely important in becoming a better person. I still have acne, and I still get headaches from my concussion but perseverance has greatly helped me be the best version of myself. I got to see the end result of the puzzle and while didn’t look exactly perfect, it was still worthwhile. If you give up on a small task, like completing a puzzle, what’s to say that you won’t give up on the harder tasks, the most important ones? Enduring through hard moments in my life, big in small, has truly made me into the person I am today. I believe in perseverance. I believe in endurance. I believe in jigsaw puzzles.
