The subtle growl of the bright, blue, and orange brushes surround us amidst the soft pitter-patter of the delicate hoses spraying the purest water on the shiny sea of sparkling black. As my mother exited the fancy car wash in our now scintillating Audi Q7, I noticed an old man in the shaggiest torn clothes, and guilt spread across my face like a crack in a glass. The guilt of taking everything I have for granted, and not being grateful enough for all that I have. Homeless people inspire me because they never give up, and they taught me to always stick together.

Homeless people are very determined and never give up. People living on the streets work insanely hard just to have a meal that night. There once was a homeless boy who would collect glass Coke bottles just to acquire enough money to subsist. He would walk seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. You may know this boy; his name was Steve Jobs, and he created the largest company in the world, called Apple. This shows how determined underprivileged people can be and how successful this can make them. Despite their dire situation, they remain industrious to make something out of their life.

Homeless people also help each other no matter what race, skin color, religion, or gender. Their genuinely good-hearted mindset is what inspires me the most. While roaming around to find a taxi after walking around Times Square until my feet were sore, I came across a person in tattered clothes with a long, shaggy, gray beard on the street. I didn’t have any change, so I tried to ignore him. However, he looked at me, and I couldn’t help but look back. He told me these words which are now entrenched in my brain, “We are all human, aren’t we, sister? Then we all gotta stick together and help each other.” These two sentences that he said inspired me so much. It doesn’t matter if I am American or Indian or Asian or African or anybody else, does it? We all still have to stick together because at the end of the day, you are human and I am human. This is the thing that we are forgetting right now. We all are humans, and if we don’t stick together, we are slowly but surely annihilating our world.

Homeless people inspire me because they are extremely indefatigable and they don’t care about your appearance; to them, humans are humans and humans should help other humans. Do I want to live on the streets not knowing if I will eat that night or not? No. However, I want to have the mindset of homeless people; the mindset that humans should help other humans, regardless of appearance. The mindset that life will get better if you work for it because after all, the good thing about rock bottom is that there is only one way to go. And that way is up.
