Due to being a woman, I face many issues due to society’s harmful stereotypes and terms towards us such as, “women who speak up hate men” or terms like “you throw like a girl.” Women have always been treated less than or have been treated as objects, causing women to face many issues throughout their life for something they cannot control. Over time, humans progress, and opinions change, but women still are getting paid less than men, getting charged more for self-care items (pink tax), and are always in fear of being attacked, since some men assume that women are weak and easy to prey upon. Sexism towards women can be prevented by teaching the younger and older generations that treating a certain gender differently than the other is wrong and protesting to make a difference.

All through society, women have been seen as innocent, small, weak, or as they don’t have any emotions or feelings. For instance, in Of Mice and Men, Curley’s wife is always treated as an object to the men on the farm. The character Curley’s wife is named Curley’s wife to show she is not her own person and is just known as Curley’s “belonging.” The men think of her as “jailbait” or a “tart” because she wears too much makeup or how if they sleep with her they could get into trouble. Women, like Curley’s wife, have a hard time doing almost anything without being put down by others (especially men). If everyone were taught in school, or by the media that women and men should be equal, Curley’s wife would’ve been seen as a friend and had gotten the attention in a better way than she had tried to. Furthermore, in To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout is constantly being told that she acts too much like a “boy” and needs to act “ladylike.” The novel and movie do take place in the 1930s (which was an even worse time to be a woman), and during that time period, women were seen even less than men and were being taught that women belong in the kitchen and how they should wear dresses not pants. If there was the correct education back then, society would’ve been used to having men and women equal by today.

Women have been facing issues with society seeing them and treating them as if they are below men and not getting the justice that they truly deserve. For example, In Just Mercy, Stevenson states,”In the United States, the number of women sent to prison increased 646 percent between 1980 and 2010” (Stevenson 200). The number of women incarcerated has gone up so much through the past years because of how society treats and thinks of women. Protesting for the rights of the equality of women and men needs to be done. It has been done before, for example, when women protested for being able to have the ability to vote, they were able to vote after the protest. Moreover, in “The Lottery,” “‘All right, folks,” Mr. Summers said, “let’s finish quickly”’ (Jackson 73). Even though Tessie asked for a recount (since her husband was drawn) they did a recount, but when she wanted a recount for herself they denied it and continued to kill her. She did try to protest for her rights of living, but she had failed. Yet another example in “The Lottery'' men draw for women, which symbolizes how women don’t have the right to do anything, even the simplest things.

Throughout time, women are seen as “different” and “feminine” even though some women are not those things. Since society sees us as weak and puts this pressure on women, causing us to yearn for justice. Men and women should not be deemed as different from one another, since we’re all human and have similar emotions. Women are sick and tired of being treated terribly by others and should be able to protest for their rights and to educate others, so we can end this never-ending hate cycle towards women.
