Have You ever been as brave as this boy? Josef Landau, the bravest character in Refugee by Alan Gratz. Josef is a 12-year-old Jewish boy who had to run away from his home in Germany, because of the Nazis. Josef is the bravest because he stood up for himself and the rest of the passengers on the st. louis, he sacrificed his own life so that his sister could live, and finally he stands up for his father against the Nazis.

Josef is protecting passengers and his family because he is standing up by saying no. As shown in this quote from the book. “No,” Josef told them. “No,” he told Captain Schroeder. “My father told me what happened to him in those camps. I can’t let that happen to my mother and my little sister. We can’t go back to Germany!” Josef is being brave here because he is standing up for his family and the rest of the passengers. By telling Captain Schroeder no, that he won't go back to Germany.

Josef is the bravest character in refugee because he gave up his own life so his sister could live. Josef said, ‘I’m a man now.’ And when those soldiers said one of us could go free and the other would be taken to a concentration camp, Josef said, ‘Take me.’ giving away his own life so that his sister could live.

At the very beginning of the book, Josef shows bravery by standing up for his father. “No!” Josef cried. He had to do something. He leaped to his feet, grabbed the arm of one of the men carrying his father, and tried to pull him off. Josef is showing bravery by standing up to the Nazis and telling them to back off and to leave his father alone.

Josef shows bravery in all of these ways and more. Standing up for his father when he was getting taken by the nazis. When he told the captain no, that he wouldn't go to Germany. Along with all this giving himself up to the nazis so his sister can live and then later on dying because of that if that's not being brave nothing is.
