It is currently the future (2048 to be exact); you are currently thriving and living your best life because you made the best decision for yourself that you could ever make. That decision would be nothing more than adjusting to artificial intelligence being integrated into the workforce. At first, you originally thought this new artificial intelligence thing could be a devastating thing to society, but now you have the complete opposite feelings about it. You’re happy you weren’t left behind like the rest.

To start off, artificial intelligence isn’t a harmful idea that everyone likes to make it out to be. There are a ton of misunderstandings about artificial intelligence being integrated into the work force. For example, Sreeram (2018) and Taneri (2020) both conducted research studies to learn more about how artificial intelligence is being integrated into the workplace and how there are misconceptions about its impact on humans. Sreeram (2018) states, "AI systems complement human societies. An oversimplified and partially misunderstood influence of AI is its effective takeover of human-centralized jobs in the future." (pg. 23). Taneri (2020) also states, "Automation and artificial intelligence are changing the nature of the work. Some tasks are being done by robots or offshored, or robots are working alongside humans. New professions are appearing for humans while some are disappearing. Consequently, there are shifts in workforce skills and how work is organized." (pg. 9).

In spite of the general public's liking to think that artificial intelligence will doom citizens across the world by taking their jobs, which is completely false. Artificial Intelligence will only be beneficial to humans as it can complement human societies by making their jobs a lot easier and rewarding us more. For example, Sreeram (2020) adds, "What we fail to see is that this transition not only prevents us from working in hazardous conditions but also reduces a company’s expenditure in manufacturing processes." (pg. 23). This means us humans can focus on more important innovating tasks that have to do with our jobs since the mundane and repetitive tasks are being automated. This extra time we spend focusing on important innovative tasks the further we can progress as in our field and as a society. Also, artificial intelligence isn’t exactly able to replace humans in a lot of jobs due the lack of skills in certain areas. For example, artificial intelligence doesn’t have the intelligence to pick up on social cues or have terrific interpersonal skills.  

Now, that we have established how artificial intelligence is going to impact the work industry. We still have a huge concern on our part. That concern would be how should someone adjust to the new revolutionizing work force? According to Rampersad (2020) these are the skills one should cultivate in the new artificial intelligence job industry, "To negotiate the challenges of work in the future characterized by increased automation, advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, rapid change and industry transformation… That the next generation of works need to be well equipped with not only deep knowledge but various skills in problem solving, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork, as well as innovation and enterprise." (pg. 69).  Taneri (2020) also mentions, "Skills on the other, (such as cognitive, inter- and intra-personal, and AI skills), call for special attention in this day and age, especially because of the changing nature of work in the era of AI. Creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, leadership, communication, collaboration, information management, adaptability, curiosity, and reflection are among the most significant skills." (pg. 7).

The job market is being transformed by artificial intelligence. If one is not adapting to the times, they will be left behind, sadly. To prevent this, one should follow and master the skills that were listed previously. These are skills that artificial intelligence machines can’t grasp and master. For instance, a skill that was previously mentioned was having good inter- and intra-personal skills. These skills are related to being able to empathize, emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and having a grasp on your attitudes and processes. Technology can’t relate to humans better than humans can relate to other humans. Thus, it doesn’t make sense to use artificial intelligence in place of humans in the job industry regarding this aspect. Another example of a skill I mentioned previously was having prominent creativity. Creativity is another skill that technology can’t grasp very well. This is due to computers and technology only being able to do what they are programmed to do. Humans, on the other hand, are able to think much more abstractly and believe whatever they want and create whatever they want. This also makes it much more sense to use humans instead of artificial intelligence in this aspect. Knowing the right skills to cultivate for the artificial intelligence revolution within the job industry can really put someone miles ahead of others. Adjusting to these new times can be challenging, but definitely very rewarding.

Moving on, there are also many other ways society is preparing future generations for the brand-new artificial intelligence revolution. Schools and universities are incorporating many different methods of cultivating the skills that were previously mentioned. Both Rampersad (2020) and Taneri (2020) talks about the different learning approaches to nurture said skills. For instance, Rampersad (2020) states, "Experiential learning is an important pedagogical tool in driving innovation. Otherwise termed work integrated learning (WIL), cooperative education, industry partnered active learning or professional development program…" (pg. 2). Taneri (2020) also states, "These capabilities of AI reflect in universities and colleges as time savers for professors to focus more on lesson planning, technology-enhanced lecturing, and one-on-one time with students for mentoring, coaching, and skills development." (pg. 4). To get a better visual idea, Rampersad (2020) did a quantitative experiment see how the students did by following experiential, WIL, and cooperative education learning methods. These students took a test before that tested their problem solving, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and innovation skills. They also took a similar test after a period of time to see how well they improved. The results were as follows, problem solving skills went from 7.94 to 8.70, critical thinking skills went from 7.74 to 8.61, communication skills went from 7.87 to 8.52, teamwork skills went from 8.11 to 8.74, and their innovation skills went from 7.14 to 8.11. (pg. 5).

With artificial intelligence being integrated into the job industry cultivating the right skills isn’t the only vital thing that needs to be adjusted, but also, the ways we are learning those skills. This is due to technology and times becoming faster paced, especially with artificial intelligence being incorporated now. Schools should focus on giving students more real-life applicable work rather than redundant-busy work. This would prepare their skills a lot better. Also, using artificial intelligence can be a significant tool with preparing students for the work force. Using artificial intelligence can not only give them hands on AI skills, but it’ll also create more time for teachers to focus and really deliver the important points of classes. This means that artificial intelligence can take over the mundane and redundant tasks teachers normally have to take care of, like grading tests, papers, etc. With teachers spending more time on helping students cultivating the skills they need, that generation will be much more prepared for the work force than the generation with teachers without the help of artificial intelligence. As a result, creating young adults who are much more innovative than previous generations.

Artificial Intelligence is inevitable in today’s world, as it is already being integrated. With its incorporation into the job industry, artificial intelligence will advance society even further and even faster than ever before. In order to get there, though, society needs to properly adjust its skillsets for the work force. This important factor will prevent all other harmful concerns regarding artificial intelligence.
