Homelessness is the lack of a place to live. Having an unstable, unsafe, and not having a permanent house is difficult for many homeless people. It prevents them from going to school and getting appropriate jobs. Moreover, homelessness has become a serious issue because of the way they live on the streets. Therefore, the most effective way of addressing homelessness is to have housing support and services. An examination of the research on this topic will show this to be the case.

Homelessness is difficult for those homeless people because they don’t have a comfortable roof in their heads. It affects individuals, families, seniors, people with disabilities, etc. Moreover, having housing support would help homeless people get away in the streets. As The Centre of Budget and Policy Properties reports, “[a] large body of research shows that the vast majority of people who live in supportive housing are able to stay stably housed in the community”. In addition, housing support would help homeless people who have mental health problems and addiction. Without attention to health, behavioural health, employment and education, and other supports, many people will continue to experience instability and recurrent homelessness. According to Fitzpatrick-Lewis et al. (2011), “[t]here is a lack of awareness and implementation of interventions that have been demonstrated to positively impact health and housing status in people who are homeless”. Studies on supportive housing interventions for homeless people with mental illnesses consistently show that these programs have high retention rates (Culhane et al., 2002). Homeless people with SMI (serious mental illness) who are placed in supportive housing experience significant reductions in homelessness, as expected (Culhane et al., 2002). Not only do homeless people with severe mental illnesses who are housed use fewer shelters, but they also reduce the use of people going to hospitals and correctional facilities. (Culhane et al., 2002). This shows that health and social policies that include the provision of housing as an intervention can be effective for improving health as well as housing status (Fitzpatrick-Lewis1 et al., 2011). Moreover, housing assistance benefits homeless people because it provides them with a comfortable and safe place to stay. Furthermore, having a home would not only keep them off the streets, but it would also reduce their use of publicly-funded crisis services like prisons and hospitals. This not only ends homelessness and improves stable housing, but also improves health and reduces public costs. To summarize, providing housing support will benefit homeless people because it will help them have a comfortable roof. In addition, it will not only help them get away on the street but will also help them avoid addiction and improve their mental health.

Homelessness is a traumatic experience for low-income families and children (Bassuk et al., 2020). Providing services for them will help them access food, clothes, money for transportation, etc. Service is the act of assisting or performing work for someone else. These services for homeless people include street outreach, case management and transportation to help people experiencing homelessness get housing. Furthermore, providing health care for them is one type of service that will help them. As Mills et al. (2015) note, “[e]nsuring homeless persons engage with appropriate health care is essential in tackling the ever-widening disparities in health between the homeless population and the general public”. Some health care professionals perceived homeless people to have relationship problems, which they saw as a trait that predisposed them to homelessness (Miller et al., 2015). As has been said previously, mental health has been a serious issue for homeless people. It prevents them from getting jobs, home, and going to school. Many homeless children struggle academically, as evidenced by poor performance, repeated suspensions, and high dropout rates (Bassuk et al., 2020). According to Bassuk et al. (2020), “[a]systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of mental illness in children experiencing homelessness documented that 10–26% of preschoolers had mental health problems serious enough to require further clinical evaluation". This shows that mental health problems are one of the issues for a homeless individual. This prevents them from getting houses, jobs, etc., which leads them to stay on the streets. Moreover, approaching homeless people by donating and giving them food, clothes, and other essential things will help them. This will help them live on hot and cold days. Also, by approaching them, people can assist them in obtaining housing, adequate shelter, and employment. Giving them a good service will help them a lot. In addition, fundraising is another service that will help them, such as raising money for a local homeless charity and raising money to buy care packages for the homeless. To sum up, services for homeless people are one of the ways to address homelessness because it helps them provide what they need and help them to have good health.

Promoting homelessness will provide many people with information that will help them in dealing with it. This will also help them in addressing homelessness, and this includes providing housing assistance and services. This proliferation of homelessness is so serious that it is difficult to prevent and get them off on the streets. Governments also need to act to address this growth of homelessness so that homeless families and individuals could have a comfortable home. If the issue of homelessness is not addressed immediately, then the number of homeless people will increase.
