Covid-19 changed everybody’s life, and nobody in the world was able to be unaffected by it. People’s opinions and understanding about the virus changed as more and more of peoples’ lives were forced to adapt. While Covid cases have been on a steady decline compared to the peak, it is important for me to look at how the world has changed during the pandemic, and how I have changed during the pandemic as well. Three great periods to look at are the start of covid in the US, the peak of covid in the US, and the current fall of covid in the US.

The start of Covid in America can be traced back to January of 2020. On January 20, the first American case was reported. While this was happening, most people seemed to think that Covid isn’t going to be as impactful as it is right now. This included me, who didn’t even pay much attention to the news of the rising threat of Covid. I, at the time, believed that I had great reasons to not scare myself about it. From January to February, there weren’t even any Covid cases. I thought that I was safe and protected while the virus would forever exist only on the other side of the globe. I was unfortunately proven wrong during the month of March, which was a turning point for the Covid timeline. The amount of Covid cases in the U.S. rose from a mere 6 to over 22,000, and WHO characterizes Covid-19 as a pandemic. This is also the month when California, the state in which I lived, became the first state to order all residents to stay home with the exceptions of essential job workers or shopping for essential needs such as food or medicine. As cases continue to grow, hospitals become overwhelmed. For some reason, perhaps since this all happened too fast, I didn’t quite realize how grim the situation is becoming. I assumed that this “pandemic” will end soon, and people, mainly the media are just overacting. While there have been many viruses and natural disasters during my lifetime, none has truly changed the structure of my life. I never could have thought that this pandemic would cause me to change my everyday lifestyle, perhaps forever.

Covid was at its worst for me when the new cases per day peaked during January of 2021, a year after the first American case was reported. The school year, while I am in the hybrid model of school, felt like a flash. Even though the new years are supposed to bring happiness into every household, everyday life has lost its freshness. The dream scenario of waking up late and napping during breaks is torturing my mind. I have been repeating the same routine exactly for months, and every time I look outside, I painfully remind myself how long it has been since the last time I truly went outside without worrying about my safety. The future seems unenjoyable, and it felt like I was going to rot in my own house. However, this is also the month where lights are starting to shine from the end of the tunnel. While at the time there were still many concerns, vaccines are starting to be pushed out to the general public. Amongst many questionable decisions made by the government such as early reopenings, this seemed like the first major step America has taken towards the goal of going back to normal. During that time, I believe that vaccines would be a game-changer. Maybe with this vaccine, schools will be allowed to reopen. Maybe with this vaccine, I will be allowed the leisure of having my normal life back.

Currently, Covid cases in America have been on a slow decline, ever since the vaccines got pushed out. Many of the people my age have even gotten their vaccinations. As people are going back to the normal routine that felt ever so unfamiliar, streets and businesses are getting resurrected. Even traveling internationally is partially recovering. While there are still certainly more than enough cases around the world, the addition of vaccines is truly life-changing. Unlike masks, which felt like me betting on the chance that a tiny particle won’t be able to breach my protection, vaccines provided humanity with a weapon that we never possed. Everybody around us has been vaccinated, and people are finally getting their swag back. Thankfully, people have learned from their mistakes of letting their guard down, and most people who arevaccinated around me aren’t treating Covid like it’s nothing. Covid is still very much a threat no matter what you do. Overall, however, I believe that America is going in the right direction in combating the pandemic. Getting our normal life no longer seems like an impossible mission.
