Is a person addicted to social media if they go on it daily? What about multiple times a day? Chances are, most can count themselves in this category. Many would argue that going on social media numerous times a day is not a bad thing and some would deem it necessary. Social media is beneficial because one can access news from around the world instantaneously, communicate with friends and family, and participate in online discussions by giving their opinion. Social media is beneficial because one can access news from around the world instantaneously. The article, “The Evolving Role of News on Twitter and Facebook”, by Michael Barthel, 2015 argues that, “Social media sites are one of the top news sources for 46% of Americans.” Based on the evidence, this shows that using social media will notify people of news happening worldwide. The article, “The Evolving Role of News on Twitter and Facebook”, by Michael Barthel, 2015 also argues that, “Social media users have been responsible for reporting events before traditional media outlets.” Based on the evidence, this shows that people who have social media can report suspicious activities happening around the world. These quotes are related because they show how social media has been used to not only spread news but to receive it. Social media is beneficial because one can communicate with friends and family. The article, "Demographics of Key Social Networking Platforms", by Maeve Duggan, 2015 argues that, “Social media allows people to improve their relationships and make new friends.” Based on the evidence, this shows that using social media can actually improve their social skills. The article, "Demographics of Key Social Networking Platforms", by Maeve Duggan, 2015 also argues that, “83% of teens report that social media helps them feel more connected to information about their friends' lives.” This matters because it shows how social media can make one feel close to their friends even if they’re distant. This supports the claim because it shows another way relating to the benefits of having social media. Social media is beneficial because one can participate in online discussions by giving their opinion. The article, “The Pros and Cons of Sharing Your Opinion with Your Audience”, by Simplicity Marketing, argues that, “sharing your opinion with others can be an effective means of communication.” Based on the evidence, this shows that sharing your evidence with other social media users can create a sense of trust between you and your community. The article, “Social media and political discussion: when online presence silences offline conversation”, by Keith N. Hampton, argues that, “commenting on others’ content, and personal messaging, on topics that might range from favorite foods to elections is a likely predictor of the willingness of a person to participate in a discussion of a political issue.” This matters because it shows that people can discuss certain things that they don’t agree about and make changes in order to reach their ideal beliefs. These quotes are related because they show how individuals utilize social media to share their opinions and the benefits of sharing them. After examining that one can access news from around the world instantaneously, communicate with friends and family, and participate in online discussions by giving their opinion, it is clear to me that using social media comes with many benefits. Those who don’t use social media should start to, because it is a great way to build relationships, share your expertise, increase your visibility, educate yourself, and last but not least, gives you the opportunity to connect with anyone, anytime.
