Personality tests are used as a means of determining and assessing someone’s personality, skills, values, interests, and even their beliefs. Which is why there are many different types of tests that can be demonstrated on an individual. These types of tests have the potential of determining important or valuable aspects of a person. However, not all tests are created equally and not all tests have the same merit or value. A personality test can only tell you what you tell it and the precision and validity of those answers are solely based on how truthful, sincere, and candid an individual is with their answers.

Some tests are made for younger audiences like children or young adults which result in less critical and vital outcomes. A younger audience wouldn’t necessarily need to know the small details of the results and wouldn’t be as critical as an individual who is taking a personality test to determine an important aspect of their character or identity. This is why websites like uQuiz, Quotev, and Buzzfeed have personality tests that are more entertaining than they are helpful. I mean you wouldn’t take a “Which Disney Princess Are You?” quiz to determine which career field you should pursue. Tests like these wouldn’t have much of an impact on a person’s psychological narratives like a scientifically conducted test would have on a person. This is why I decided to do my personality test assessment on a quiz that was more lighthearted and less scientifically based. I choose the Sorting Hat Ceremony Quiz from the Harry Potter Universe. This quiz is available at the wizardingworld.com and is a quiz to determine which Hogwarts house you could fit best in. I decided to do this test because not only were the Harry Potter books my absolute favorite childhood books but I also liked the idea of a more relaxed and less critical test. The Sorting Hat Ceremony quiz doesn’t necessarily determine who I am as an individual but may divulge a bit about my personality.

The Sorting Hat Ceremony Quiz is very short with only eight questions to answer. Perfect for an individual that wants to know their results quick and also not have to answer a ton of questions. This quiz asked questions like “What kind of instrument most pleases your ear?” and “Which road tempts you most?” Questions like this are used to determine where a person would fit in the best and are not meant to dissect someone’s personality per say. After answering all of the questions I was given my results for my Hogwarts house which was Hufflepuff. They also had a neat little saying: “You might belong in Hufflepuff, where they are just and loyal. Those patient Hufflepuffs are true, and unafraid of toil.” I already knew the answer to this quiz since I took it for the first time a couple of years ago but it was nice to know that my answers were still the same to get the same results years later. Also according to J.K Rowling, the founder of the Harry Potter Series, a Hufflepuff is someone who is trustworthy, loyal, and hardworking. I can see those traits in my own personality so I agree with this quizzes assessment. I believe the goal of this quiz was to measure a small part of a person’s personality to determine what traits they have that best matches the types of people that would belong in that house. Because the quiz was so short I personally don’t think this quiz could have really determined much else about a person.

Assessing this quiz I thought of the validity and reliability of it. Validity means a test is valid if it measures what it claims to measure. So for example if a quiz is about books then the entire quiz should be about that topic and not something completely random. For the quiz I took I believe that it had face validity to it and it measured what it claims. I learned what Hogwarts house I would fit best in and that was the whole point of the quiz. Reliability means the ability of a test to provide a consistent result after being performed more than once. In regards to the Hogwarts house quiz I believe that you could potentially get a different result based on the answers you picked. I personally can’t say for sure since I tried to test out this method four times and I received the same result of Hufflepuff each time. Nevertheless if someone were to try hard enough to pick different answers each time I believe that they could be successful in getting a different Hogwarts house but that all depends on circumstance.
