Analyzing Luke Combs Instagram page in a rhetorical way allows the follower to understand who he is, what he does, where he performs, takes trips etc., and why he does what he does and why he became a singer and songwriter. In Becoming Rhetorical Nicotra states, “being social animals, people are deeply rhetorical… all of us work to craft a persona for ourselves…” (2) allowing others to create a relationship with us without knowing the other. Social media is based around being rhetorical and allows the follower to know who the user is, where they are from, go to school, etc., what they have experienced in their lives, and why the user does what they do. It is something that is used on an everyday basis without realizing it, but as I go into more depth on Luke Combs Instagram page I am able to understand who he is and build a relationship with him over social media.

Combs' Instagram page is filled with a mixture of photos, but they have to do with his music, his wife, or the trips he goes on. Scrolling through his Instagram he uses “communicates character” (9) by showing that he is very passionate about his music, his wife, and how he spends his free time. Showing his fans what is truly most important to him and what is most important in his life. Going more into depth looking at one of Comb’s posts, from August 18th, 2020, “excited to announce 5 new songs will be available on October 23…” (Combs) showing his excitement he has towards his music. Another representation of ethos is when he posted a picture of him and his wife on their wedding day with the comment “Yesterday was the best day of my life. I got to marry my best friend.” (Combs 8/2/20) His words obviously say the way he feels. His comments make the reader feel the amount of love he has for his wife and how much she means to him. Another picture that uses ethos is a picture of him and his wife in the desert smiling having a great time on an adventure. He also quotes “a much-needed weekend adventure” (Combs 6/28/19) describing his trip. Throughout his page he uses his words and facial expressions to convince the viewer what is most important to him and show his fans what he loves the most.

Instagram uses pictures to share people’s lifestyles quickly with all the users’ followers. Luke Combs has millions of followers and shares his music and his way of life constantly. To gain this number of followers/fans, Combs' music persuaded them to like him. He then uses his Instagram page to “appeal to the audience” (Nicotra 382) to make them feel like they relate to him. Combs' Instagram keeps his fans up to date on new music, what he is doing, who his friends are and how he is living life. An example is a post he posted on April 27th, giving a preview of his new music video for the song “Forever After All.” In this process he is using ethos by promoting his new music video, making his fans excited for it to come out so they can view it. He also uses pathos in another post he had on May 2nd, showing his when he married his wife. This draws his followers in letting them connect with him and his music. The way he does this is by posting a video of him crying and showing emotion on the happiest day of his life. This makes his followers relate or have empathy for him making fans feel special. This then promotes his music because the song is based on the day he got married. He again uses pathos to draw in more fans by posting a picture with country star, Willie Nelson. He uses the emotions of Willie Nelson's fans making them want to support Combs just like Nelson does. Combs uses emotions and persuasion to make his followers feel connected with him, causing them to support him and want to buy his music.

Reaching out to fans is one of the most important parts of being a country music artist. Country music is known for the stories it tells about heartbreak, falling in love, and drinking beer. The music is very easy to connect with and makes people want to play it in the car or on their wedding day. Combs uses his social media to reach out to country music fans by telling stories throughout his page, as well as his music. He uses pathos to show how relatable he is to his fans making them adore him more.

Luke Combs uses rhetorical appeal through his Instagram to draw in country music fans that enjoy the stories he tells with his songs. He uses logos by informing his followers what he is up to in daily life. His post with his wife, about his music and his daily adventures tell his fans what he does daily. He then uses ethos through promoting his music to drag in more fans. These posts make his followers want to listen to his new songs, watch his new music videos, or watch him perform live on TV. It drags in larger crowds and makes him more popular across country music. He also uses ethos to make emotional connections with his fans. His post with his wife causes fans who are with a significant other to feel like he knows exactly how they feel. It allows fans to relate and makes his music more meaningful. His promotion of his music grasps the attention of his fans making them excited to hear the stories he must tell. Combs uses his way of life, so that his fan base can grow through rhetorical appeal. Which is one of Luke Combs specialties.
