Robots Can't Replace Human Essay Example

Humans can not be replaced! As technology is on the rise, different inventions are being created. Such as humanoid robots. Robots are programmed to do things that humans usually do. But these robots lead to many different problems such as replacing human jobs, leading humans to be inactive, and causing humans to lose their social aspect. This demonstrates why it would not be ethical to replace human workers with robots.  

To commence, if robots were to replace workers many jobs would be taken away from humans. Most people rely on jobs to provide for themselves and their families. If people don’t have jobs to work they won’t be able to make money which will lead to multiple negative effects. All around, everyone in the world needs jobs as a way of income and a way of living. 

It is clear that replacing humans with robots would not be ethical because it leads to jobs being taken away from innocent humans. Many people have expressed and shared their experiences with their jobs being taken by technology. The article “Time - Millions of Americans Have Lost Jobs in the Pandemic—And Robots and AI Are Replacing Them Faster Than Ever”, stated that Larry Collins worked at a toll booth for about 28 years than when covid happened the toll booths started using FasTrak tags to collect the money (Soffar, 2019). Which led Collins to not be able to return to his job anymore since it was taken over by new technology. “One study estimates that about 400,000 jobs were lost … But the drive to replace humans with machinery is accelerating as companies struggle to avoid workplace infections of COVID-19 … while some have come back, some will never return. One group of economists estimates that 42% of the jobs lost are gone forever. “ (Soffar, 2019). In this, it illustrates that many jobs were taken by robots aka artificial intelligence during the pandemic that won’t be later replaced by humans. This is a large bulk of jobs were taken leaving humans with fewer jobs to choose from but the population of workers is steadily increasing. Which will not provide a good outcome. 

Adding to the same point.  According to the scholastic article, “Should We Worry About Robots Taking Over”, robots have been taking over the workforce for a long time, and right now there are about 3 million industrial robots being used worldwide and experts are expecting more and more jobs to be taken over in the near future. This goes to show that robots have been around for long periods of time and have gotten more advanced. To the point that they are taking jobs and will take even more jobs in the future. In the scholastic article, it states, “ There are now robotic chefs, explorers, coaches and more. Today's advanced technology also allows machines to be creative.” This highlights that the use of robots is spreading beyond industrial work to more personal jobs, which is the most common. 

Supporting the point that robots should not succeed human workers. In a paper written by Daron Acemoglu, an MIT professor, and Pascual Restrepo, a Boston University professor. From their studies, they concluded that “One more robot per thousand workers reduces the employment to population ratio by .2 percent points in wages by .42 percent.”(Acemoglu & Restrepo, 2022) This demonstrates how one robot entering the workforce can do damage. Anything reducing the employment to population rate is damaging to human workers because that means humans are losing more jobs. Then if the wages are decreasing that means people are making less money.  In a separate article by, Sara Brown, about the same paper, she wrote,” Acemoglu and his co-authors found that French …added robots became more productive and profitable, but that increases in robot use led to a decline in employment industrywide.”(Brown, 2020). This reveals that robots are being manufactured worldwide meaning they can take over worldwide. 

Secondly, the replacement of humans with robots will lead humans to be inactive. Robots doing full-time jobs that humans usually do will leave nothing for humans to do. Most people get up and go in to work on a daily. Which allows people to get in steps and just be active. Also, humans might become complacent which also leads to people starting to be inactive. 

An article, by Carly Page, states,” … much like how after the Industrial Revolution people became less physically active and began to gain weight as machines replaced manual workers, reliance on automation could make people less intelligent. “ (Page, This illustrates that after the Industrial Revolution jobs were taken which caused people to become lazy. The same thing can happen with the rise of robots. Instead of physically, it can with human minds causing them to be less sharp. Brains usually develop from critical thinking or challenges but if robots take over humans will no longer have anything to do and won’t have a challenge. 

Summarily, robots can cook, outrun you, fly, magnify things, prep your medicine, make music, make deliveries, perform surgeries and so much more (Lincoln, 2018). This shows how many things a robot (artificial intelligence) can do. This will probably lead humans to rely on robots for all their everyday activities. Like their errands and household chores. This will ultimately make humans become very dependent on robots and not do anything for themselves. 

Finally, humans will lose their social aspect if robots take over. Robots are designed to do repetitive actions or tasks. They aren’t designed to hold conversions, make friends, or provide overall happiness. All these things are needed for human interaction. Which is essential to every person’s aspect of health. 

Robots can cause a tremendous decline in human social health. “ Especially as machines are made to look and act like us and to insinuate themselves deeply into our lives, they may change how loving or friendly or kind we are … but in our reactions with one another.”(Christakis, 2019). This highlights that robots are made to act like humans but, not really the social aspect of it. So if robots start to be implemented into human life more and more their social interaction will decline at the same rate.” In one experiment, adding a few free-riding bots to a team of human players converted generous people into selfish jerks.”(Christakis, 2019). Experiments are showing the implementation of robots into humans’ daily interactions has caused people to turn outside of their character. 

Continuing, people can get attached to robots (or artificial intelligence) which is sometimes not healthy. Shulevitz, a digital assistant, has admitted to confessing things to her Google Assistant, an artificial intelligence virtual assistant, that she wouldn’t tell her husband (Chrisrtakis, 2019). Usually, people tell their spouses, her husband, in this case, different things like “secrets” but she decided to tell her Google Assistant. This shows that humans can grow really comfortable with different devices instead of with people. \

To support, Christakis stated, “ Children who grow up relating to AI in lieu of people might not acquire ‘the equipment for empathic connection, …’”(Christakis, 2019). This shows that children can even be affected by robots or artificial intelligence. If they are shown these things too early it could be hard for them to start forming healthy connections with humans. “Children’s attachment formation with robots can become problematic when there are deceptive design features or data collection that enables loss of privacy, along with the related potential for damage to children’s welfare.”(Pearsons, 2020). This highlights that the way robots are designed can be detrimental to children’s social development. If they are designed in the wrong way children will not know how to properly adjust if they are already attached to the device. 

Others may argue that robots will not take human jobs but instead provide more job opportunities. Due to the fact that robots need to be monitored which provides one job. 

In the findings of the Rapp Project, Shelby, states, “Since we will be using robots, there will be more jobs available for making those robots. Most machines will also require employees to monitor the overall process to identify the errors that machines cannot detect.” (S.,2021) However, this idea is weak because the management of robots just provides humans with one type of job. While robots are taking away multiple jobs in different fields. Once robots start taking over there will be no need for humans to work anymore. “This means each additional robot added in manufacturing replaced about 3.3 workers nationally, on average.”(Dizikes, 2020). This proves that in the future more jobs will be lost than provided. 

In conclusion, it will not be ethical to replace humans with robots. It can lead to multiple detrimental issues. Based upon research robots will take jobs multiple jobs from humans. As well as lead humans to be inactive because robots can do multiple things that humans do to stay fit. Lastly, they can lead humans to lose their social aspect due to the fact that robots don’t have emotions but can manipulate humans to feel as they do. To prevent robots from taking over you should sign multiple petitions to send to factories and developers of robots. Don’t be afraid, just go for it!
