Role of Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream Literature Essay Example

How else would all the lovers be in such a quarrel? The Athenians didn’t sprinkle the love juice on themselves. Without Puck, none of the chaos would have happened. Who is Puck? How did he crucially impact the play? Enough questions here’s a quick overview. Puck, known as Robin Goodfellow, is a mischievous, troublesome, and funny character in the captivating classic, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, the play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular and widely performed plays. His importance was developed in act 2 scene 1 when he was introduced. Puck had a significant presence in the play as he served Oberon and his miscreant spirit set many of the play's events in motion which can be seen by his order to cast a love potion on people. Puck is also a key character as he intertwines the three subplots, the Fairies, Athenians, and Mechanics. The play would be meaningless without him.

Puck made the Athenians fight like cats and dogs from his silly games and pranks, this made Puck's pivotal presence in the play extremely important. How else would there be hilarity and drama? You may think it was the Athenians fault for entering the woods, but can you imagine the lack of entertainment if Puck didn’t mess up the love potion between the Athenians? You may call this an exaggeration, but Puck was the only one who made the play interesting! In act 2 scene 1, the fairy described puck as a mischievous and naughty spirit which clearly shows her perspective on Puck isn’t any different to the others. Puck replied, “And when she drinks, against her lips I bob. And on her withered dewlap pour the ale.” This quote reveals Puck was proud to play pranks and did it for his own enjoyment. Puck and his comedian nature added hilarity when mixing up the potions between the Athenians, which was the climax of the stories plot and added more interest to the audience. So, my dear friends, let’s be honest the entire context would not have occurred without Puck. In addition, Shakespeare’s way of writing was very unusual as he used many different language features. Rhyme was a fundamental feature when speaking about Puck as it complimented his personality and character trait adding a playful feel to it. He uses this quite frequently, in fact he rhymed with the last word of the quote mentioned, “pour the ale, saddest tale.”                                                                                                                                                       

Puck was essential to “A midsummer night’s dream as he slaved for Oberon. Fetch me this herb and be thou here again.” Oberon ordered Puck. “I’ll put a girdle round about the earth in forty minutes.” Puck replied. This statement emphasises Puck’s loyalty to Oberon also sensing he is tremendously self-assured and would do anything to please his majesty, King Oberon. I know, he seems a bit obsessive over him, does he even get paid!? As I previously stated, he provided hilarity, but now you can understand he was also influenced by King Oberon as he admired him, which caused the madness to arise. I would also like to mention that he did good deeds for others although, those 'good deeds' didn't always come out ‘good’. Who would have brought the magical flower and mixed it up if it hadn't been for Puck? Shakespeare not only demonstrated rhyme he also had an included exaggeration.

Oh, puck and his humourist side, motivation, eagerness, and his loyalty to Oberon causing the chaos, climax, and the major parts of the play. Believe what you want, but you know I’m secretly right. Other characters may have made their way into the forest themselves but look beyond the text and truly delve into the world of the play, realise how Puck’s character contributed considerably to the chaos, drama, and laughter, and that without him ‘A midsummers night’s dream may as well not exist.
