Running Out of Time Book Analysis Essay Example

Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix is a novel about a girl finding herself in a new world to save her family. But, its plot isn’t something new. There are many similarities you could make to many different books. Running out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix has elements you could find both in The Giver by Louis Lowry, and A Stranger Came Ashore by Mollie Hunter, as in both The Giver and Running Out of Time, the main character discovers a new world in the unknown, and in A Stranger Came Ashore and Running Out of Time, the other characters don’t believe what the protagonist says because they are young.

In the text of The Giver, it states, “Why don’t we have snow, sleds, and hills? Jonas asked. Its a very distant memory. I had to tug it from many memories back. So, our world went to Sameness.`` Then, in the text of Running Out of Time, “Jessie wondered if the world outside Clifton looked similar.” and, it states multiple times, “The world outside” These quotes show us  How in both of these books, they have separate worlds unfamiliar to the protagonist. In The Giver, they show us how Jonas is questioning why they got rid of things that existed. And the Giver says that its a memory from many generations back, and the world went to sameness. In Running Out of Time, it shows how Jessie is in a world she doesn’t know. This all matters because it shows us how both characters are exploring an unknown world. Which shows us evidence for the thesis statement.

In the text of A Stranger Came Ashore, it states, “I’ll have the whole island laughing at me if i let a boy your age bring nonsense into this case.” And, in the text of Running Out of Time, it states, “I called the news conference about Clifton Village. See? It’s just a hoax! A mere kids prank!” Both of these quotes mean that the protagonist is trying to tell people about some danger that isn’t believable. These quotes matter because it shows us how both protagonists aren’t believed because of their youth, which ties back to the thesis statement.

In summary, Running Out of Time has many similarities to both The Giver, and A Stranger Came Ashore. In The Giver, both of the protagonists in both of the books explore a world of the unknown. And in A Stranger Came Ashore, both of the protagonists try to tell people of dangers, but are not believed due to being children.
