Samuel Hamilton Character Analysis in East of Eden by John Steinbeck

Confessing the truth for the greater good was something Samuel was unafraid of. Samuel Hamilton always wants to do good on behalf of the ones he cares for, so when it comes to relaying information and words of wisdom he does not have a problem doing that. In the novel, East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Samuel represents a father figure not only to his own children but to the other people he cares about by having their backs and giving them the advice they need. Striving to help others and do what is beneficial for them, Samuel Hamilton exhibits traits of being a guardian. His selfless, responsible, and easy-to-please character makes it easy for people he cares for to come to/trust in him.

Like a guardian, Samuel Hamilton exhibits a caring and level-headed personality in the story. While Samuel and Adam were catching up, Adam asked if Samuel thought the rumors about Cathy were true; due to Samuel’s loyalty and dedication to his friend he states,“I can’t tell you how to live your life… [but], I know it might be better for you to come out from under your might-have beens,” (Steinbeck 296).  His sensibility and mind of reason enable him to influence his friend and insight the tough love advice that he needs to hear. Samuel’s personality leaves him to be trusted by many and protective when it comes to those they care about. 

Samuel’s Guardian-like responsibility is demonstrated in his parenting style. With a passion for education and literature, he takes it upon himself to educate and share this knowledge with his kids. Passing his love onto his kids allows them to be advanced  “[the] children were often presumed to have intellectual advantages, both inherited and conditioned” (Steinbeck 147).  Responsibility for his children's education fell on Sam. In the time period education is highly valued along with the ability to work. Samuel sets his kids up for success by creating well-rounded children.

The ability to make do with what Samuel has is noted by the way he overcomes the obstacles he faces. Inventing things were second nature to Samuel, however, he was a bad businessman and would often never collect what was owed to him. He ended up taking on many odd jobs to provide the bare minimum.   Adam Trask is looking for help with a well and a farmer suggests he see Sam, “Sam’s got a real legitimate reason to be interested in water. Hasn't got a damn drop of it on his own place… You'll like Mr. Hamilton. He’s a fine man” (Steinbeck 138).  The land is dry and unfertile, however he uses his cleverness to provide for his family. The flexible man has the ability to make the best of his situation, then uses his knowledge to benefit others.  Although he never became wealthy he lived a happy life and gained many relationships from the work he did. Often the jobs he did gain trust and created relationships with many. 

Samuel's dedication to his loved ones, responsibility and sensibility highlights his Guardian personality. 45% of the population relates to Samuels character and the selflessness and loyalty he displays. The people close to him can attest to his loyalty and constantly strive to do good.  The middleman of characters provides a contrast to the intense characters like Cathy and Cyrus. Biblically, he represents God and works to do what is best for his family and friends, giving them advice even when it might cause them pain.
