Scene Analysis of Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Endgame (Essay Example)

Anthony and Joe Russo are brothers and they have directed Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Cherry (2021) just to name a few. Anthony and Joe Russo's film Avengers: Endgame is the final instalment of Marvel's infinity war saga. The film premiered in April, 2019, and it became the highest grossing movie of all time passing Avatar (2009) after its release. 

The scene I will be focusing on happens 01:05:23 into the 3 hour long movie. This scene has 17 frames and lasts about 57 seconds. And what happens in those seconds are very important since it sets up the entire plot of the rest of the movie.  This scene is essentially just a speech, but it’s a speech about time travel and how much is at stake and they simply can’t fail this mission§.§It’s about how they lost everything 5 years ago and now they have one chance to make it right. “One round trip each. No mistakes. No do-overs.” is a direct quote from the scene, and it shows the audience how high the stakes are for this trip. It also shows how they only have one shot to try and make it, so that they can restore their universe, and if they were to make a mistake they would fail. 

This scene starts with a wide establishing shot of a hangar and the sun is rising outside through the glass wall. The characters are entering the 1 frame from the left, and we see almost everyone going on that mission. As the scene continues, the audience can see that they are walking in slow motion. The camera slowly pans down to a close up the line of where the characters are walking, and shows them to the audience, except for one character which is a raccoon. There are 8 frames of them walking onto this platform which is revealed earlier that it is a time machine. During those 8 frames they are walking in slow motion, and they don’t stop with the slow motion until they are standing on the platform. The first shot of them standing still is a close up of their hands touching each other, before the camera cuts to a medium close up of Captain America, Iron Man and Ant Man in the blurry foreground.  When they are standing there, the camera pans around in a circle capturing their reaction and facial expression as Captain America keeps his speech going.

§change location?§As they are getting ready to leave and do their different missions, Captain America or Steve Rogers hold a speech to remind them and the audience of how much they have lost. He reminds them that even if you are going somewhere familiar to still look after each other and keep their guard up.
