When applying for college, just like many high school students, I was lost in deciding what major to choose. From a young age, I was mesmerized by computers through the world of video games. However, it was Elon Musk’s quote “Model S is not a car but a sophisticated computer on wheels” that intrigued me to pursue a major in Computer Engineering as I was passionate about both the hardware and the software aspects of technology. There is no doubt how computer systems have been integrated into every part of our life. We can take any electrical appliance and add a microprocessor and integrated circuit to make it “smart”. The field of computer science is limitless and every year we are making brand new digital revolutions. From the creation of the internet, blockchain technology, driverless cars, artificial intelligence, and metaverse, it seems that the brightest minds are coming up with new inventions that we have never thought of. There are limitless possibilities to incorporate into the field of computer science and studying my major has inspired me to advance into the role of software developer hopefully in the giant tech companies or working in the field of data analytics in fintech companies. Currently, I am seeking internship opportunities over the summer to gain relevant work experience and expand my knowledge of programming, software development, and data management.

I am expected to graduate in the Spring of 2023 and I hope to find full-time employment in one of the giant technology companies to contribute or make an impact in the advancement of technology. In the long term, I plan on applying to graduate school to pursue a Master’s degree as I am motivated to continue learning deeper in my computer engineering field.

It has always been a financial challenge pursuing a bachelor’s degree here in the US especially coming from a middle-income family and being a citizen of a developing country in Asia. Throughout the last two years, my family has been able to sustain my tuition and living expenses with the money from my college fund that they have saved up for years. However, due to some unprecedented recent events, it has become extremely challenging to sustain my tuition abroad.

To share my family’s situation, my father is a civil engineer and he works at a local construction company. Recently my father brought to my attention that the firm he is working for has not been able to fully pay its employees and staff for the last 5 months including higher-ranked employees such as my father. The company, that my father works for, lost a great number of its current government contracts over the pandemic and has been struggling to report any profit and find new projects. Moreover, it is highly probable that the company will file for bankruptcy and cease to exist. To add more, my father is around 66 years of age and it is extremely challenging for him to find a position in a new firm as he is over the national retirement age. My mother, on the other hand, lost her job at the beginning of the pandemic and she was never able to return back to work. Additionally, with my mother’s educational and employment background, it is not possible for her to find adequate paying employment. Furthermore, my family has significant medical bills as my mother has type 1 diabetes and my father has cardiovascular problems and severe asthma. To add more, I have a younger brother who is a junior in a private high school back in Bangladesh and my family also has to spend a notable amount of money on his education.

On-campus, I currently work as a Community Advisor (commonly referred to as Residential Hall Advisor) for University Student Housing. In brief, I am in charge of maintaining civility in the residential halls, fostering relationships with residents, and managing other administrative duties. Due to my international visa status, I am only allowed to work 20 hours a week and only on-campus. As a CA, my housing and meal plans are covered as part of my salary and I only receive a monthly stipend of $155 with which I can barely cover my miscellaneous expenses such as food, snacks, books, and transportation costs. Furthermore, I do not have the option to take a semester break and work to save money for my next semester’s tuition as I will lose my visa status and face deportation. To add more, I have never gone back to my home country for over two years ever since I came to the US. This is because my family does not have sufficient money to afford to spend a couple of thousand dollars on international flights.

As a first-born child, it is highly expected of me to complete my engineering degree and support my family financially. With my family’s current financial situation, it has been overwhelmingly challenging for my family to sustain my tuition fees. If I am awarded this scholarship, it will reduce my semester tuition fees to an amount that my family and I can somehow manage. Moreover, this scholarship will help me to stay in college and complete my bachelor’s degree. It will help me to focus more on my academics and classes rather than over-stressing on how I will pay my next tuition installment. Nonetheless, this scholarship will help me to relieve my financial burdens and stress and improve my mental health.

I hope you will consider my application and understand my financial situation. Thank you.
