I graduated from Du Quoin high school. If you know the small town of Du Quoin, then you know that this town does not have much to offer. There is a lot of poverty, drugs, parties and violence in my hometown. If you were to ask someone who didn't grow up like me, their views might be different from my views on Du Quoin. My family is does not have a lot of money by anymeans, but we got by together. When I graduated, I was certain that I wanted to pursue a higher education in the health care field. However, I also worried about how am I going to pay for college. My mom has a lot of health issues, and my dad is the only one thatmakes an income. I made the decsion to get a job, and I started working at least 50 hours a week. This was because my parents had my other three sibilings to take care of, and I needed to pay for my  college education. My determination, perserveitacne, and dedication has contiued to push to achieve not only my carrer golas but also helped me become a better person overall. I also am determined to finsih college with my degree to set an example for my younger sibilings. If I did not have my family's support and encouraging words this journey would be a lot harder. I have contiued to reasearch and look for scholarships to help with my college education and help pay for books, fees and gas to get ot school.

I also believe that being the first person in my family to go to college made my decision of attending to college more challenging. My mom and dad did not really understand anything about college and neither did I. So, towards the ending of my senior year of high school, I talked to the academic advisor about going to college and finding scholarships to help pay for my  schooling. Through the guidence of my academic advisor I decided to go to the community college of John A Logan to contiune my education and achieve my goals.

One of the first things that I have done in order to overcome the challenge of being a low-income student is to get a job. I am attetnding John A Logan in the nursing program, and I wanted to get a job in helathcare. There was an opening position for a Patinent Care Tech at an emergency departemnt, and I appiled for the job. SIH Herrin ER hired me for the job, and I am still currently working there. I love my job even though working full time and being a full-time college student is not easy. I will also help my family with anything I can help with. The reasoning of that is because my parents have supported me and gave me so much in life, and I want to help them in any way I can.

I am still contiuing to search for scholarships that will help me pay for my education. I am very grateful to find opportunities like this scholarship that is being provided to students. Change is up to me; no one else is responsible for my actions. I want to change my family cycle, and prove that college is possible. I want my sibings to know that change can be for the greater good. If I do not get this scholarship, at least I know that the way change has infulenced my life and many decisons including to purse a higer education is setting an example to my sibingls and may even other peopl/kids who are going or have went through the same experiences.
