My essay topic is about school uniform, the big question about it is…

Should school uniform be a thing or not be a thing?

The reason I chose this topic is because I want to know other people’s opinions on this topic and what they think of it. Should it be worn or not worn?

Personally I think it should not be a thing. Here are some reasons and opinions I am personally opposed to school uniform and some contrary views.

One of my reasons are that the world outside of school does not consist of people wearing uniform or having to follow a dress code, therefore school uniform is not really preparing anyone for the ‘real world’ or in the world outside of school. This is pretty much saying there is no such thing as uniform in the real world so students shouldn’t wear school uniform as there is no real reason to it.

A contrary reason to this that completely blocks this opinion against school uniform is that there is uniform and dress code in a lot of other ‘real world’ for instance, If you’re a police officer, a doctor, nurse, fire fighter and even a scientist you’d usually wear some sort of uniform in the work practice or occasionally if not all the time outside of the work practice. As a police officer you would usually wear uniform that consists of a police vest, either a white shirt or some sort of operational shirt, a duty belt to carry all your gear and sometimes police officers wear black or dark navy colours for them to be harder to spot at night. As a doctor/nurse you’d typically wear nurse slacks and medical scrubs.

Like shown a lot of jobs in the ‘real world’ do have dress code and/or uniform which invalidates the first opinion that was against school uniform.

My second reason that I am against school uniform is that students will lose their identity as an individual as “School Uniform makes us all the same” this also links to losing their individualism for the same reason, practically the same with students losing their self-expression, as if school uniforms are worn, everyone looks the same which means there is no originality and students cannot express how they feel through their fashion or choice of clothes, nevertheless they have to wear the same clothes every day to school which can interfere with that.

My second contrary reason to that is wearing school uniform that “makes us all the same” isn’t bad as people can be saved from bullying and it prevents getting made fun of for your choice of fashion or your style. As it may be hard on people to get told that their choice of style is bad each day in school if it’s a genuine look you want to go for it may be demotivating or daunting. If everyone “is the same” because of uniform nobody can talk about each other’s clothes in a hasty manner, as they all have the same clothes.

Let’s discuss some opinions

The first opinion is from HERE on a website called Quora. The poster’s opinion basically says, he acknowledges school uniform may help with the bullying problem or that it’s cheaper, or against school uniform he took into consideration that a con of school uniform doesn’t let students be themselves, his conclusion was that he believes school uniform doesn’t work and students should be able to wear whatever they want but within a specific dress code.

My personal opinion on this is that I agree with what he said and even when I take all the negative and positive points into consideration I come to a similar conclusion that school uniform shouldn’t be a thing, or be an optional choice for all students, but students should wear whatever they like but with some boundaries placed by the school as of course nobody wants to see students come in with bikinis or other inappropriate for school wear, so there has to almost always be some sort of dress code.

I also agree with the opinion from Quora that school uniform doesn’t really work and it does not prevent bullying as students may get bullied for their regular appearance as in being called ‘fat’ or ‘anorexic’ as in the mean ways, So bullying would still thrive if school uniform was in place or not, another opinion of mine to back this up is that if a student was already getting bullied regularly and the school uniform system disappears one day, I personally don’t think the student would stop being bullied as they were already being bullied to begin with and the bullies wouldn’t see a reason to stop. (Not saying there’s a reason to bully anyways.)

I would also like to mention how people say school uniform is  cheaper just like in the Quora opinion stated at first, I’d like to speak from personal discussions with people from my family saying that they don’t think it would be cheaper to buy school uniform, as if you wear your everyday clothes to school you will be putting them in a washing machine anyway and you won’t have to wash school uniform + your normal clothes after the day ends, yet only the normal clothes as you’ve been in school with them and out of school, the main outcome from this is if you have less to put in your washing machine the less you have to use the washing machine therefore the less money you spend on electricity, school uniform may be cheaper to begin with but over it will start costing even more to keep it clean than to not have it and save money in the long term.

Some Facts about school uniform

According to this website topic about 10 school uniform facts, 7% of children said they would be worried if there was no school uniform in place, while 70% of the 14-year olds said they were not worried when thinking about what school would be like without school uniform and wanted to wear their own clothes to school, 20% said they were fairly worried. The rest 3% didn’t know how they felt about no uniform being in place.

According to another article by this website on school uniform, 23% of parents struggle with the money for school uniform, this means that the uniform that the children/students are sent to school in can be impure or billowing, this can make the students uncomfortable and feel dirty or ugly. Parents may struggle with money for the school uniform as they have to buy it all, they also have to clean it, and sometimes repair it if it breaks or buy a new part.

On this web-page it says how in a study done in 2012 it was found that there is literally no difference between “Disciplinary Incidents” or Graduation Rates, they tested this by comparing two statistics, one was before school uniform was introduced and one was when school uniform was in place. This shows that uniforms are unnecessary and aren’t needed as there is no pay off.
