The life of a student can be stressful at times. Homework, extracurriculars, or studying can be a lot on our plate. Many students suffer from anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues from school. Stress from school can be caused by many different things. Students should have the freedom of staying home from school due to stress or anxiety, and doing so can benefit their mental health. 

There are a lot of students that fall victim to a mental illness, most popular being anxiety or depression. According to a wide-ranging study called "Methodology for Epidemiology of Mental Disorders in Children and Adolescents," One out of five children ages nine to 17 in the United States had a diagnosable mental or addictive disorder. Some cases in teens are more severe and can have an impact on their daily lives. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, 10 percent of children and adolescents had mental illnesses severe enough to affect their daily lives. 

There can be many different reasons for students to stress over school. One of the main reasons is testing. According to “Teen Health Series: Stress Information for Teens,” students can develop test anxiety. Test anxiety occurs when a person is excessively apprehensive about taking a test and forgets any previous knowledge on the test. Another school-related topic students stress over is their overall academic performance. According to “Coping With Stress,” teenagers feel the pressure to get high grades that will allow them to pass or graduate. 

In some ways, taking a mental health day can benefit students’ mental health. During their mental health day, a student could participate in activities that relieve stress. One example of a stress-relieving activity could be meditation. Meditation is used to clear the mind from stressful situations (Stress and Stress Management). Another thing students could do is exercise or take naps. 

It is common for students to feel overwhelmed by school, and even develop anxiety disorders or depression as a result. Students should receive mental health days to help relieve the stress and benefit their mental health. You should not feel ashamed of taking mental health days because the rapid decline of mental health in America is a serious issue.
