People act differently based on where they are, and who they’re with. Like when someone is hanging out with friends, they act differently than when they’re with their parents. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby” the settings that develop Fitzgerald’s character’s interactions are the Valley of Ashes, East Egg, and West Egg.

When we first see Tom in East Egg he’s showing Nick their luxurious home. “He has changed since his New Haven years. Now he was a sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious matter”  (Fitzgerald 7) This quote lets the reader know that there has been a major change in Tom’s character. He is very arrogant and prideful in his house and lawn. I know this because in the book Nick describes Tom’s house as a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial.

The apartment that Tom owns for his affair with Myrtle develops Tom’s character through his interaction with Myrtle and Nick. Tom took Nick to Wilson’s garage and that’s where Nick met Myrtle. They go back to the apartment and Myrtle phones her sister insisting on having a party with a couple by the name of Mckee. Tom cheated on his wife, and he showed her cousin the place he was having his affair and introduced the woman he was cheating with. Publicly taking his wife’s cousin to meet the woman hes cheating on his wife with, shows that he’s a horrible person, and he’s proud of what he’s done. If he has the courage to do something like that, you’ve got to have a lot of arrogance to do that.

Tom believes that wealth is everything, Tom’s wealth is a huge part of his character. Tom never worked for his money, it was handed down to him. He is a hypocrite when it comes to love, he wouldn’t let Gatsby near Daisy because he’s afraid that Dasiy will fall for Gatsby and have an affair with him. He hates Gatsby with everything in him, but only because he’s afraid someone is going to find out that he had an affair with Myrtle.

Tom is racist, sexist, a cheater, a short-tempered man. He is also a big hypocrite, he would get very upset if Daisy went and had an affair but then went and had one with Myrtle, and somehow got away with it. Tom is not a nice person, and he shouldn’t have gotten away with that. He is afraid that the world is gonna find him out and come crashing down on him. He’s a self-absorbed snobby person, an abusive husband who doesn’t deserve the money he has.
