Sewing Essay Example
Knowing how to sew is a very useful and important skill to have. People who know how to sew have the ability to make clothes for themselves, fix a torn outfit, or make adjustments to make their clothes fit better. Meanwhile, those who don’t know how to sew would have to go to a tailor to have this done.
Before seamstresses can begin sewing they need their sewing equipment: needles, thread, pin needles, a sewing machine, fabric, scissors, measuring tape, chalk, and any other thing they would want to add. Seamstresses can decide whether or not they would want to add things like zippers, buttons, or elastic bands. They may also need a sewing pattern, but that depends on how large of a project they want to create.
To begin, seamstresses have to decide on what fabric they would like to use and begin to think of what stitch pattern would be best for their project; the stitch pattern can vary based on what fabric they choose and what the purpose would be. Then they must gather all the materials needed.
Once all materials have been gathered then seamstresses have to find a flat surface where they can work and then lay all of their materials down. Along with this, they would lay out their fabric, begin to plan out exactly what they will be doing, and take all the measurements needed.
After taking all the measurements they will then cut the sewing pattern using those measurements. Afterward, seamstresses will then cut the fabric, but when they do they will make the fabric about a centimeter and a half larger than the sewing pattern to make room for error, the stitch, and any threads that may come loose while sewing.
Once all the pieces have been cut then seamstresses will then put those pieces together with pin needles. At this time they will check to make sure there haven’t been any measurement errors. By this point, the seamstress’s image of the project should begin to come together.
Now the actual sewing process can begin. Seamstresses should have decided whether they would like to sew by hand or by machine and what stitch pattern they are going to use. They then have to carefully take out one pin at a time and only take them out on the sections they start sewing. If they take too many out at once then the fabric will lose its shape.
Lastly, after they finish sewing they will check to make sure that no pin needles have been left on the fabric, there haven’t been any missed spots, or any measurement errors. Now they have their complete project.
When people decide to take on a sewing project they should be careful; when using a sewing machine because their fingers could get caught under the needle as well as if they decide to sew by hand because they could prick their finger with the needle. To avoid those accidents they should be in a place with minimal distractions and always carefully watch what they’re doing. To avoid any errors they should double-check their measurements.
