Should People Be Allowed To Carry Guns Essay Sample

Some people think that you should be able to carry a gun with you, while others think that you should not be able to carry a gun with you.  It's clear that overall, you should be able to carry a gun with you, the government cannot take away all the guns from everyone that owns them even though guns are used for some not great things.  Some reasons that people should be able to carry guns on them are so that they can protect public spaces, protect people within public schools, and for personal recreational purposes.

One reason that people should be allowed to carry guns with them is to protect themselves and/or others in public spaces.  ASK HOW TO CREDITThirty-one percent of gun owners, which is the same as twenty-five point three million people, in the United States have had to use a gun in self-defense ().  This shows that people need guns for self-defense or else about twenty-five million people could have gotten hurt or even killed.  Dave Bartkowiak Jr states that right now you are allowed to carry a gun with you in Michigan as long as it is not concealed.  So right now you are allowed to carry a gun on you but it can not be concealed.  Technically you can use it as a threat or scare someone with it but not much else.  It is proven by Bloomberg that Americans own more guns than anyone else on Earth, so why would you take that away from them?  It would be the same as someone saying you could not own a phone.  You can use a phone for harm or for good which is the same as guns.  Imagine if everyone who owns a phone had it taken away from them, what would you do?
A second reason that people should be able to carry guns with them is so that they can protect public schools.  Mark Amlin says that if teachers were able to carry guns on them they would not only be able to protect themselves but be able to protect students in case of a shooting or any other emergency where they might need to scare the other person.  All in all, this suggests that teachers should be able to own guns because it could lower student deaths.  “About forty-five percent of people already think that teachers should be able to have guns on them while they are in school” (Parker 1).  We just need to convince the rest of the population and show them all of the good reasons that teachers should be allowed to carry a gun on them while they are in school if they would like to carry a gun.  They could even get training on how to properly use a gun if they want to.  It is proven that there are already some states that allow teachers to carry guns on them while in public schools such as Texas, Utah, Wyoming, and South Dakota.  There should be more states that allow it so then students could be more protected.  But also there are some bad people out there and there is always someone who uses this against what it is meant to be and could hurt the students.

Another reason that people should be able to carry guns on them is for personal use.  Personal use can include hunting, use in your house, or anything else you wish to use your gun for.  About forty-four percent of homes in the United States already have guns in them, states Lydia Saad.  Also, about a third of adults personally own a gun.  About forty-six percent of people mainly own their gun(s) for personal protection and sixty-two percent of people own them for protection against crime.  This shows that most people own their gun(s) just to make them feel safe against anything that could happen to them.  Of course, a gun won't protect you from anything but it could help make you feel safer against a robbery or someone trying to harm you.
While there are valid points to be made on both sides of this argument, there are some cons.  Such as, access to a gun triples your risk of death from suicide.  Also, firearms have become a big part of mass shootings.  And lastly, the United States has mass shootings almost every day.  Some may think that guns are not good at all because all they hear about are the bad things that happen and none of the good things that happen about how people can protect themselves and/or others.
